Oddling Prince
Oddling Prince | Nancy Springer
4 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
In the ancient moors of Scotland, the king of Calidon lies on his deathbed, cursed by a ring that cannot be removed from his finger. When a mysterious fey stranger appears to save the king, he also carries a secret that could tear the royal family apart. The kingdom's only hope will lie with two young men raised worlds apart. Aric is the beloved heir to the throne of Calidon; Albaric is clearly of noble origin yet strangely out of place. The Oddling Prince is a tale of brothers whose love and loyalty to each other is such that it defies impending warfare, sundering seas, fated hatred, and the very course of time itself. In her long-awaited new fantasy novel, Nancy Springer (the Books of Isle series) explores the darkness of the human heart as well as its unceasing capacity for love.

I'm quite proud of how this picture came out, if I'm going to be honest! It's so pretty for a book I wasn't too keen on.

The Oddling Prince was a good book, in the way of the writing was good, the structure was good, the originality was good. But the plot could have been better. It was a good idea, but it was executed in an odd way. That and the relationship between the brothers was very sudden and bordered on romantic, which was weird.

I'm reading this pretty quickly and...I think I can't read Goodreads reviews before reading a book anymore. It's the really critical ones that seem to stick with me. Or maybe it's just this book, maybe the flaws are real. Not sure. At least one of the flaws is legit, but I'm trying to remember it's middle grade to young adult, written very youngish. Anyone else read it?

My buddy and I are about to start this fantasy. A sick king, a curse, two brothers, who will save the kingdom?

ARC provided by NetGalley for an honest review.
A good book in the style of older fantasy novels. I liked the pacing, it avoided side quests and the like, I liked the characters (mainly Aric's father). The writing was a little too old-fashioned for me, but might appeal to many readers, and the ending was predictable. I also wish the magic system had been developed further. Recommended for those who enjoy older fantasy novels.
