Stop-Time: A Memoir | Frank Conroy
4 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
First published in 1967, Stop-Time was immediately recognized as a masterpiece of modern American autobiography, a brilliant portrayal of one boy's passage from childhood to adolescence and beyond. Here is Frank Conroy's wry, sad, beautiful tale of life on the road; of odd jobs and lost friendships, brutal schools and first loves; of a father's early death and a son's exhilarating escape into manhood.

Library #bookhaul on what has turned out to be a snowy Iowa day. Will probably start with the new issue of Midwest Living, though, while my cat snuggles on my lap. ❄️📚

I don't like these sentences even a little bit. Heard good things about this so I won't bail yet, but it's on thin ice

brooklynreads Why have I never heard someone say "I don't like these sentences" before? ??What a simple but perfect way to put it. I say: don't work too hard on something you aren't even enjoying. 8y
Alfoster Good call! I never thought of that either! When it doesn't flow, it's too hard to read😍! 8y

Ericmanciniwriter Also his being gay has nothing to do with story, so why mention it? And why feel the need to address pedophilia just to say it wasn't happening, as if to create a link between that and homosexuality. Blargh 8y
RanaElizabeth Bail! Conroy won't know you bailed and it will make you feel better not to read such nastiness. 8y
Abby-J Ugh. What poorly written bigotry. (edited) 8y
minkyb Not looking good. 8y
Cinfhen I just had a similar reading experience with a book published in 1970😡it's really jarring to see pages full of bigotry😧 8y
Ericmanciniwriter @Cinfhen it's hard, isn't it? Part of me wants to grade these types of comments on a curve - norms change over time. A bigger part of me doesn't want to tolerate it - period. 8y

The reading pile for the life writing course I'm teaching keeps growing...and it's wonderful.

"I withdrew into myself and let the long months go by, spending my time reading....The real world dissolved and I was free to drift in fantasy, living a thousand lives, each one more powerful, more accessible, and more real than my own."
