Everlasting Man (Revised)
Everlasting Man (Revised) | G K Chesterton
8 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Considered by many to be Chesterton's greatest masterpiece of all his writings, this is his whole view of world history as informed by the Incarnation. Beginning with the origin of man and the various religious attitudes throughout history, Chesterton shows how the fulfillment of all of man's desires takes place in the person of Christ and in Christ's Church. Chesterton propounds the thesis that "those who say that Christ stands side by side with similar myths, and his religion side by side with similar religions, are only repeating a very stale formula contradicted by a very striking fact." And with all the brilliance and devastating irony, so characteristic of his best writing, Chesterton gleefully and tempestuously tears to shreds that "very stale formula" and triumphantly proclaims in vivid language the glory and unanswerable logic of that very striking fact. Here is the genius of Chesterton at its delightful best.

Finished my first book for #Lent2020. This was in some ways a very heavy book - The history of man and the history of Jesus, and how Christianity differs from other religions. In other ways, og was easy, probably because of Chesterton's style, he uses humor, irony and sarcasm, and I LOVE how he compares Christianity to a weird, immortal, single woman. Will def read more Chesterton in the future 😀

Lcsmcat You got me with “weird immortal single woman” Stacked! 5y

I'm not great when things get unpredictable, and as my country's getting more and more corona victims, I get stressed out. Not because I'm too scared of getting it, but because I hate not knowing what will happen for the foreseeable future. So now I'm going to try to forget about the world of 2020, and to back to Chesterton's thoughts on things from 1925. #lent2020

Lcsmcat I hope he has some words of comfort for you. We spent most of the morning at work making “what if” plans. 5y
HannaPolkadots Yeah, it is tiresome, my students ask and we don't really have an answer for them, some schools are closed and some aren't. Where do you work? Oh, and Chesterton was a bit of a miss today, he wanted to talk about hatred and evil, while I was more in a happy pink cloud sort of mood. Happens in the best relationships 😉 5y
Catherine_Willoughby We have 5 confirm cases here in Cork (some are saying 9) , Ireland. 40 cases out of 5.6 million citizens. 1 death today. Our government will not state city or county where cases are. Not even confirming location of death! One self isolation linked to a school. 1 case linked to Apple Campus north of where I live. Worried as cleaning essentials are getting scarce now. Worried about getting food 😔 5y
HannaPolkadots @Catherine_Willoughby 💚 Our schools just shut down nationwide, am going home now and we won't reopen until after Easter. Weird times... 5y

If there is one fact we can prove, from the history we know, it is that despotism can be a...late development...and the end of societies that have been highly democratic. A despotism may almost be defined as a tired democracy. As fatigue falls on a community, the citizens are less inclined for that eternal vigilance which has truly been called the price of liberty; and they prefer to arm only one single sentinel to watch the city while they sleep.

tpixie Democracy always ends. But not yet. I think there actually was a big voter turn out. Just surprising results I m confident in Goodness. No matter what! 📚📚📚 8y
