Unfortunately, I don‘t believe the book lived up to its inspiration in large part because the story, which was ok, was hindered by an inaccurate portrayal of archaeology, perhaps deliberate, which proved to be too distracting for me to overcome. It‘s a bummer because the inspiration is fascinating & worthy of a good story. I suspect others might find it more interesting than I did but be warned there is no real archaeology in this adventure.

ravenlee I was so disappointed in this book. It had such promise! But it let me down at every turn. I‘m astounded that the sequels were even published. 6y

😡

I promise not to post every time the author says something egregiously problematic—my fingers might cramp up—but to say I‘m disappointed is an understatement...Not archaeology. An adventure maybe, treasure hunting definitely, but archaeology? Nope. Better to simply call this an adventure with a paranormal twist.

Wrong! Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. And here we see the problem in being an archaeologist reading about an archaeological adventure—often the people writing it don‘t understand archaeology and/or collecting and museums. It should be said, putting important or noteworthy objects on display is not the sole purpose of most museums which typically display only a fraction of their collections. The character is wrong! Ok, done with the soap box.

Back to the deep dive into the TBR stacks. I‘m fairly certain I blurbed this book when I first picked it up which I did because it‘s described as “...an archaeological adventure with a startling paranormal twist.” I‘ve been on plenty of archaeological adventures but never one with a paranormal twist. Hopefully this is a fun one! (13/50)

This book seems like a winner: 14-year-old twins Rachel and Adam are spending the summer with their Granny in an English village, far from their home in NYC. There's mystery, sinister forces, an ancient secret...

And then it falls apart. The pacing is ok, the villagers are suitably creepy and sinister. The true villain shows up late, granny is worthless, then the twins have superpowers?! And, what, aliens? Angels? And bam, it's a trilogy. Ugh.

ravenlee So, there's really no resolution, everybody is a bad guy to some degree, and I'm so irritated I read this at all. Now, what do I do with it? Give it away and hope somebody else likes it? Give it to the library? Toss it in the recycling bin? Bah. 7y
ravenlee Also, I'll take a stab at @Samplergal 's #sixby6. One down! At least something came from reading this book. 7y
Samplergal You can do it. If not, you still got some reading in. 7y

I had a Rory Gilmore moment this morning: I took a book with me...to the library. Trying to finish my current read while the kiddo played on the computer. Yes, I am Rory.

jwashreads Rory is a good person to be 😁 7y

Well, the downside of #13inthree seems to be that, after a weekend of lovely reading, everybody and everything in my life has conspired against me the rest of the week. I think I've read for an hour total since Monday. 😔

Also, not sure what to make of my newest read. It's another one of my sister's castoffs. Kinda weird so far.

ReadZenRites The description does sound intriguing... 🙂 7y

An archaeological adventure with a paranormal twist? Of course I‘m going to read this.
