Gateway to the Moon
Gateway to the Moon: A Novel | Mary Morris
8 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
From award-winning novelist and memoirist Mary Morris comes the story of a sleepy New Mexican community that must come to grips with a religious and political inheritance they never expected. Entrada de la Luna is the sort of town that ambitious children try to leave behind them. Poor health, broken marriages, and poverty are the norm, and luck is unusual. So when Miguel Torres notices an advertisement for a position looking after two small boys a few towns over, he jumps at the opportunity. Rachel Rothstein is not the sort of parent Miguel expected to be working for, though. A frustrated artist, Rachel moved her family away from New York looking for a fresh start, but so far New Mexico has not solved any of the problems they brought with them. But Miguel genuinely loves the work and he finds many of the Rothstein family's customs similar to ones he sees in his own community. Studded throughout this present-day narrative are historical vignettes following the ancestors of Entrada's residents, beginning in fifteenth-century Spain and moving forward to the discovery of America, highlighting the torture, pursuit, and resistance of the Jewish people throughout history, leading to the founding of the enclave that Miguel now calls home. A beautiful novel of shared history, Gateway to the Moon is a moving and memorable portrait of home and community.

Great book!! Better to read the book instead of the audio for this one I think.

I started this one out in audio - which was just okay - so I switched to finishing it with the hardcopy. I'm finding I'm enjoying much more in hardcopy format.

This book made me feel like I was driving through the desert on a well maintained road on a nice warm day. It was easy and beautiful in a sparse way, an interesting view that also kinda blurred into nothing at times. Lots of historical information and family drama, but smoothly done. Recommended if you need a break from hard and epic reads, a nice palette cleanser. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼1/2

mrozzz Wow what a great metaphor! 7y

I love the interweaving of two different timelines. Morris put in a lot of research and it shows. Thanks to #netgalley, and double day books for the chance to read this one.

There are many ways to diversify your reading. Here are 8 novels *I* think fills the bill. As always for my roundups, descriptions on my blog, or look the titles up right here on Litsy http://www.bethfishreads.com/2018/04/8-april-novels-to-diversify-your-reading.ht...

A bath and a book.

So far this ARC is excellent. I find myself gravitating towards it everytime I have a free moment.

There are some wonderful moments in this novel that follows a family in two timelines: 1492 and 1992. The backstory of Jews in Spain and how they came to the new world was 👍🏼The story telling, however, was disjointed. The modern story was detailed and slow. But the historical storyline sped through many generations quickly and with only a barebones telling, leaving the story more like an outline than a fully realized narrative. #netgalley

RadicalReader @Well-ReadNeck I seriously thought the author for this book when I first seen it on my timeline was Mary Poppins 7y
