Who knew stories about privileged (or privileged adjacent) New Yorkers leading pretty pleasant lives would be my jam this summer. It's almost like reading fantasy. 😛
But there's something very lovely and humane about Colwin's writing. I can see why she has such ardent fans.
Ruthiella What else have you read and enjoyed in this vein? 🤔 3y
merelybookish @Ruthiella Maybe Heartburn by Nora Ephron? But I'm pretty new to it, to be honest. I generally haven't read much "light-ish" stuff (always been a bit snobby about it) but I read some recent articles on Colwin that made me curious to read her. Also, my summer has been so stressful between school & move prep that I've needed something light. I have this Barbara Torpido lined up next 3y

merelybookish @Ruthiella Do you have any recommendations? I think Standard Deviation fits this description too 3y

Ruthiella Maybe Seating Arrangements by Maggie Shipstead? I just like your sub-sub genre classification. I find it interesting when people who read a lot find these niches. Right now, when I get a copy and the time, I am fascinated by books featuring awkward young women making bad decisions: like The New Me by Halle Butler. I think The New Black Girl could also fall into this category. 3y
merelybookish @Ruthiella I like that! Sub-subgenre. 🙂 My other niche is novels about mothers who leave/disappear/abandon their families. 3y
Ruthiella @merelybookish I got two for you there, though stylistically and in tone, very different: The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri and Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler. 3y
merelybookish @Ruthiella Yes, I've read them! 😉 But please send me any others you discover. 3y
merelybookish @Ruthiella Another good one 3y

Centique @merelybookish ooh books about mother‘s who leave - have you read The Leavers by Lisa Ko? I loved that book. 3y
Centique And another “New Yorkers living fairly pleasant lives” would be Sweetbitter (but you‘ve probably read it already) It got mixed reviews but I think it suffered from being overhyped. 3y
