The Grip of Film
The Grip of Film | Richard Ayoade
13 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 14 to read
Gordy LaSure's passionate about film. He eats film, he drinks film, and sometimes he'll even watch a film. But most of all he loves talking to people about film: whether a comely student with low confidence and a father complex, a Studio 'development' exec who doesn't trust his own judgement, or the countless people Gordy LaSure's encountered in his capacity as the web moderator on an Excessive Sweating Discussion Forum. Gordy LaSure's alwaystalking about films and how they'd be a shit ton better if only people would pull their asses out of their ears and listen to Gordy LaSure. The voyage of this book can be categorised as an attempt to understand How In Hell Film Works. Why are some films bad, and some films terrible? How come just a handful of films (Titanic, Porky's, Dirty Harry) areany good at all? Gordy'll tell you How and Why, and he'll give you a slug of Wherefore on the side. And he doesn't shoot from the hip; he shoots from the gut.

You‘re told early on not to read straight through but I did. 🤷🏻‍♂️
An alphabetical collection of quips, sneaky one-liners, puns, uncomfortable farce, sad truths, and even some insights, it‘s an odd film book with an uncommon premise.
Having familiarity with Ayoade‘s work on Dark Place & Ayoade On Top helps make this sentence salad rewarding. On Top rewards the reader with Ayoade‘s humanity while Grip is his searing cleverness and critique.

jmofo Picture is unrelated to the book, just Ayoade in a bubble on Travel Man. This is book 4/6 for #BHC and my #triplespin for April (still working on my #bookspin and I haven‘t opened my #doublespin yet) @wanderinglynn @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 5y
jmofo And here are a couple samples, if you‘re curious: “I am as frustrated with this as you are about to be” “The head is just a fancy funnel” 5y
SW-T Love Ayoade! 🥰 5y
zezeki I love Ayoade, but I still haven't read any od his books. 😅 5y
DrexEdit Richard Ayoade is awesome! I've been watching Travel Man clips on YouTube. Need to find his books but they are not in my local library. 👍💜 5y

7/15 #jumpstart2020 @Clwojick @Lizpixie

This kidney infection is really kicking my ability to read in the arse, I‘m so uncomfortable and in pain :/

Didn‘t dislike this but it wasn‘t as good as Ayoade On Top, I think I found it being written in someone else‘s voice a bit tiring to stick with. I‘d much rather read something written without the character next time. The narrator being a dick was funny a lot but sometimes just too dodgy

TrishB Hope you‘re on the mend soon. 5y
wanderinglynn Oh no! I hope you feel better soon. 💚 5y

Gordy LaSure is a cinema obsessed madman who teaches “movie classes” from the back of his “meat only” taco stand. He is racist, misogynistic, & lives in his jeep.

He is also a product of the comic genius of Richard Ayoade who writes this encyclopedia of film “from A to W” from Gordy‘s deranged point of view.

This is a dip-in-and-chuckle, not a read-straight-through.

In short, better than film school. Or at least significantly less expensive.

“Remember the start of 2001: A Space Odyssey? Bunch of monkeys collecting bones. What‘s that got to do with space? They don‘t even have lasers!

Cut that shit.

And what about Citizen Kane? If they‘d wanted to gross some dollar, they should‘ve called it Dude, Where‘s My Sled?”

vivastory Oh, man.. I actually lol at this 😂 😂 6y

This legitimately made me laugh out loud.

Also I will now only be referring to Lawrence of Arabia as a “desert flick”.

Now that I‘m taking a (probably temporary) break from book monogamy, in addition to my novel I‘m reading this goofy encyclopedia of film “from A to W” by Richard Ayoade writing as cinema-obsessed madman Gordy LaSure, a gift from my brother a couple Christmases ago.

“Is there any moment in time when you‘re doing something better than watching Predator?”

Bookwomble Richard Ayoade is so funny - have you seen him in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace? Just hilarious 😂 6y
zezeki I love Ayoade! 6y

These are my Christmas gifts from my brother and his girlfriend.

I‘ve already been flipping through The Grip of Film which is a treatise on action movies written by fictional character Gordy Lasure and it is hilarious. Excited about it and Life Moves Pretty Fast.

Only heard good stuff about Black Hammer!

A Shadow All Of Light is a cool-looking fantasy by a semi-local author.

Plus the new solo album by Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke!

GrilledCheeseSamurai Black Hammer is 👌 7y
brennahawleycraig Life Moves Pretty Fast looks very interesting! 7y
DrexEdit I idolize Richard Ayoade. I'll bet that's a fantastic book! 7y
