From the Mouth of the Whale
From the Mouth of the Whale: A Novel | Sjn
4 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
From the Mouth of the Whale is an Icelandic saga for the modern age. The year is 1635. Iceland is a world darkened by superstition, poverty, and cruelty. Men of science marvel over a unicorn's horn, poor folk worship the Virgin in secret, and both books and men are burned. Sjn introduces us to Jnas Plmason, a poet and self-taught healer, banished to a barren island for heretical conduct, as he recalls his gift for curing "female maladies," his exorcism of a walking corpse on the remote Snjfjll coast, the frenzied massacre of innocent Basque whalers at the hands of local villagers, and the deaths of three of his children. Plmason's story echoes across centuries and cultures, an epic tale that makes us see the world anew.

Jónas is a man in 1600s Iceland who has been exiled to a small island off the coast, from where he ruminates and recounts his story. This is a weird book with odd structural changes and vivid, gross descriptions. But, ultimately, I kinda liked it.

Cinfhen Hi!!!! Hope all is well by you 😘 5y
Hooked_on_books @Cinfhen Hi! 👋🏼 We‘ve been down a worker and added a customer this week so it‘s been a little stressful, but in the end, it‘s flowers. So the stakes are low. 😆 5y

Of course I would go book shopping on Jolabokaflod in Reykjavík and pick up a book by a local author. As the holiday demands, I started reading it right away on this brisk Icelandic afternoon! (Ok, not really, but it made for a good picture. ?)

Jee_HookedOnBookz Hahaha love your caption! Happy reading and happy holidays! 6y
