Firestarter: Me, Cricket and the Heat of the Moment | Ben Stokes
10 posts | 2 to read
Ben Stokes is not cast in the same mould as the vast majority of English cricketers. Fiery, combative, gladiatorial - he plays the game hard and with great gusto. He is an all-rounder who bats, bowls and fields at full throttle. Some opponents feel threatened by his physical stature and aggressive brand of cricket. Stokes simply doesn't back down, smashing the next ball for six, bowling his 90 mph "chin music", or taking a breathtakingly full-stretch catch at backward point. Whether it's thrashing the fastest ever Test century at Lord's or the quickest ever Test double-hundred by an Englishman (against South Africa at Cape Town, in January) or destroying the Australian batting at Trent Bridge, Stokes plays the game he loves with his heart on his sleeve and with 100% effort and commitment. Cricket fans adore him for it. His very first book focuses on the pivotal moments in his life and career so far. These episodes are vibrant, emotional, poignant - revealing the man in three dimensions, red in tooth and claw. From being forged as a young boy in New Zealand, to moving to Cumbria at the age of 11, to playing county cricket for Durham and then onto the England team, this book provides a riveting insight into one of the most exhilarating figures in sport today.

CarolynM Congrats. As I said to @Andrew65 I'm glad I was asleep in bed rather than suffering through the drama. 5y

Andrew65 An incredible man, seems to have taken him a couple of years to recover from his personal problems. Seems to have made him mature. He scored 2 runs from the first 60 odd balls! Was listening on the radio, wonderful emotion and he did the impossible. Certainly is his Summer. That World Cup innings and the overthrows, then two successive test hundreds. Wouldn‘t have been possible without his non stop bowling performance either in the second innings. 5y
TrishB @Andrew65 I was brought up listening to test cricket on the radio - it‘s how my Dad did all sports. He had a quiet room and you could only go in there and be quiet- hence I would read and test cricket would be on the radio! Stokes has found his groove at the moment, a true sporting hero. At least it makes the rest of the ashes still a contest too. 5y
Andrew65 @TrishB What a wonderful story and wonderful memories. Always love over the Summer listening to the test matches, so much better than tv coverage. 🤞This can be a turning point. (edited) 5y

Hoping to get back to Bookish posts and #secretsantagoespostal postings tonight. But I‘ve been at work for 2 hours and have spent it so far putting out fires caused by other people‘s lack of planning. Sorry. Rant/whine over. Happy reading Littens. I‘m going to get back to that tonight.

cobwebmoth I hope the rest of your day is better! 7y
CocoReads Thank you. It‘s chaos here due to our one big fundraiser that we do every November. It‘s more chaotic than usual because everyone wanted to have it but no one wants to chair or help with the actual work. 7y
CocoReads It will calm down after this week. And then it will just be the usual holiday planning and extra year end stuff. 7y
Zelma Ugh. Sounds terrible. I hope it calms down for you soon and you get back to bookish calm. 💜 7y
CocoReads Thank you all! I️ think it will. I‘m just more stressed than usual because a. No ones chairing this year and b. This stupid chest cold I‘ll go ahead and throw in a C. The older I️ get the more grouchy and less patient I️ am 7y
