Ms Ice Sandwich | Mieko Kawakami
24 posts | 32 read | 26 to read
A quixotic and funny tale about first love - from the Akutagawa Prize-winning author. A boy is obsessed with a woman who sells sandwiches. He goes to the supermarket almost every day, just so he can look at her face. She is beautiful to him, and he calls her "Ms Ice Sandwich", and endlessly draws her portrait. But the boy's friend hears about this hesitant adoration, and suddenly everything changes. His visits to Ms Ice Sandwich stop, and with them the last hopes of his childhood. A moving and surprisingly funny tale of growing up and learning how to lose, Ms Ice Sandwich is Mieko Kawakami at her very best.

I‘ve not been paying as much attention to Litsy lately as I ought, so I‘m diving into #DaysDevotedTo to be pulled back in.

This one has been on my TBR for far too long, I must read it soon!

5/5 ?

Not many authors can write children's voices well but Mieko Kawakami is an exception. I loved this novella and I love this author. This is such a sweet and heart-warming book.

"I've already had to deal with the hardest thing in the world. You know what that was? It was to try to meet someone who's already disappeared."

BarbaraBB Is this a new one? I haven‘t heard of it yet and have enjoyed all her others 13mo
Night_Reader @BarbaraBB 2017, so not new. Very short book, only 92 pages. 13mo

A bit reminiscent of Convience Store Woman, in this super short novella a lonely boy who loves art develops a bit of an obsession with the woman working the sandwich counter at his local supermarket. It's a short, sweet novella.

Started this one two days ago, but I haven‘t been able to dedicate too much time to reading. Hoping to finish this 92 pager tonight 🙈. It‘s a story of a 4th grade boy that is fascinated by a woman that works at a local supermarket. The story also follows his home life and his peer relationships at school. So far it‘s interesting and sweet :)

[Book not in database]

Another wonderful and wry story by Mieko Kawakami with another awkward main character. This one spends her days in expensive department stores where people spend insane amounts of money on clothes, jewelry and make-up. In between she checks her Twitter, where she follows anonymous girls who do everything to look like models.
In just 35 pages Kawakami again pulled me in completely. Thanks for sharing it with me Meg ❤️❤️

batsy I really liked Heaven and have yet to read her other books, but this sounds so good! 2y
BarbaraBB @batsy I‘s gladly send it to you if you want. It‘s quite small and it already travelled from the US to Europe! 2y

This was a really sweet novella. Glad I read it. The main character was great, and his story will stick with me. (Wondering if Kawakami‘s work ever gets adapted? I could see this being excellent on-screen.) Onto the TBR Breasts and Eggs goes!

This started strong but left a lot of loose threads. The author brought up too many personality traits and plot points for such a small book. Still, I loved the MC. I wish he was my neighbor. I‘d invite him over for sandwiches after school. #readaroundtheworld

With incredible serendipity this novella I just read fits for today‘s prompt! A lonely young boy becomes mesmerised by the sandwich lady at the local market with her icy blue eyeshadow and her cool, calm demeanour. It‘s really sweet and naive in a good way - I love it when an author can tap into a child‘s point of view.

This is a cute, sweet novella about a boy who goes to the convenience store just to look at the big eyed woman who works behind the sandwich counter. He finds herself fascinating or to be specific "her eyes fascinating". It's simple and cutesy and a very refreshing read. Perfect to read while commuting. Also liked how it's narrated in the perspective of a fourth grader.

🥪Slice-of-life tale about a boy & his 1st crush: the lady who sells sandwiches at local grocery store.
🥪Story is about perception, specifically how our personal perceptions are affected by those around us.
🥪Carries motifs of life‘s fleeting nature, missed opportunities being lifelong tides of regret, bittersweet first crushes, & struggles of yearning.
🥪Frustratingly inconsistent meshing of British & American English.
🥪Prattley prose.
🥪3.5/5

A rather strange book about a young boy who becomes infatuated with the woman who sells sandwiches at the local store. There's this undertone of sadness and longing throughout.

I hadn't heard of this book or its author before. But the title and the fun cover caught my eye.

It's a coming of age novella, about growing up and learning to cope with all these strange new emotions and feelings. Kind of moving, in that subtle and quirky Japanese way.

I read Ms. Ice Sandwich by Mieko Kawakami as part of my pledge to read for 24 hours last weekend. I read four books. My eyes hurt. And I haven‘t read a page today. Not one page. And I didn‘t even spontaneously combust or anything.
Ms. Ice Sandwich is a Japanese novella about a boy obsessed with a woman who sells sandwiches. It is a slim, tender novel about being totally smitten for the first time.

Just downloaded this book because of its cute cover and title. Judging a book by its cover? That's me! 🙋
Are you?

(And hey it fits #pop2018 - set in a country that fascinates me. And for #readingwomenchallenge - in translation and also translated by a woman)

Ash.on.the.line I‘ve definitely judged a few books by their cover! 🙋🏻‍♀️ 7y
