This was different from other stories I've been reading in my collection of Victorian ghost tales. It spent more time than usual establishing the main character as a flawed young man. He is vain and silly, comes from a family in genteel poverty, and gets himself fired from a job he needs. Usually, the main character is simply a tool for investigating the mystery. BTW, in this case, the mystery is an open door that won't...stay....closed....“
