Awakened
Awakened | James S. Murray, Darren Wearmouth
The star of truTVs hit show Impractical Jokersalongside veteran sci-fi and horror writer Darren Wearmouthdelivers a chilling and wickedly fun supernatural novel in the vein of The Strain, in which a beautiful new subway line in New York City unearths an ancient dark horror that threatens the citys utter destruction and the balance of civilization itself. After years of waiting, New York's newest subway line is finally ready, an express train that connects the city with the burgeoning communities across the Hudson River. The shining jewel of this state-of-the-art line is a breathtaking visitors pavilion beneath the river. Major dignitaries, including New York Citys Mayor and the President of the United States, are in attendance for the inaugural run, as the first train slowly pulls in. Under the stations bright ceiling lights, the shiny silver cars gleam. But as the train comes closer into view, a far different scene becomes visible. All the trains cars are empty. All the cars interiors are drenched in blood. As chaos descends, all those in the pavilion scramble to get out. But the horror is only beginning. High levels of deadly methane fill the tunnels. The structure begins to flood. For those who dont drown, choke or spark an explosion, another terrifying danger awaitsthe thing that killed all those people on the train. Its out thereand its coming. There's something living beneath New York City, and it's not happy we've woken it up.

🎧 Creating a Z train line under the Hudson wakes monsters in the dark. Now there are people trapped, in the dark, under the Hudson. Reminded me of The Strain or Relic/Reliquary Pendergast. The author narrates. It was worth the free library read, thank you Hoopla. There was political intrigue, murder, death, violence, betrayal, monsters, heroes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

⭐⭐ The creatures part was great. The people? Not so much. Highly unbelievable and ridiculous characters. Plus a shadow organization hiding the existence of the creatures? Nah.

3.75* This is a really fun, subterranean horror/sci-fi book. Lots of action and some great characters. It has a lot of plot holes but it moves fast enough that you don‘t really care. My big issue: I feel like it‘s written to be turned into a movie. That and a series. You can tell that from about halfway through. Still very entertaining and I‘ll for sure be reading the whole series.

Can‘t remember where I saw this suggested but I‘m glad I did. So far, a very interesting subterranean horror.

ReadingOver50 Ooo yes. I really enjoyed the book and am ready for the sequel 😄 6y
MaddestMax @ReadingOver50 Cool! I just noticed it has a sequel coming when I put this in. It‘s always nice to be reading a [so far] good book and know a sequel is on the horizon. 😬 (edited) 6y

The story reminded me of 2 of my favorite horror books, The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone and The Descent by Jeff Long. In these books, humanity is threatened by a heretofore unknown species living underground. The story has likable heroes, some terrible villains, double crosses and some mild political intrigue. The ending is a definite set up to the next book in the series. The story was interesting, I was rooting for the people to make it to safety.

Bailedbailed

Alright I give up. I‘ve made it to 64% and I have zero motivation to pick this up so I‘m bailing. There‘s nothing inherently wrong with this book, for all appearances it should be a quick and action packed read. Which action packed it definitely is, but I am dragging my feet. I‘m just not sure this book is for me. I might give it a try (and read the last 100 pages I‘ve got) later but for right now...not for me.

Isn‘t this that guy from Hamilton? Kind of odd for a real person in our pop culture to show up in a book where it‘s an alternate future and everyone else is made up...President, mayors, technicians, everyone...except him. I don‘t know, it just strikes me as weird 🤷🏼‍♀️

rachelk It‘s a blatant attempt to get free Hamilton tickets! 😂 6y

An entertaining sci-fi Horror/thriller. Kind of implausible but entertaining nonetheless. It has characters to become invested in, one or two surprise deaths, and lots going on beneath the surface - in more ways than one. However the reader is left feeling just a little dissatisfied with the experience. Rating: 3 ⭐️

Thanks to NetGalley and publishers, Harper360, for the opportunity to review an ARC.

I didn't get to read much today, but I did spend most of the day dealing with the shipping and online sales reporting of the tagged book (the author James "Murr" Murray is on Impractical Jokers and co-wrote Awakened). Murr personalized a few hundred books for our bookstore to ship out. Exhausted, but now I really want to read the book!

This book read like a cheesy 90‘s action movie.... I really liked it! Ridiculous one liners, monsters from the deep, and melodrama makes for a fun book. Out this month! 🤗 #goodreadsgiveaway

You know it‘s Wednesday when you see this same view in a picture from me! 😂 Reading some before yoga.
Side note: didn‘t mean to start this book but I had read the first chapter and I couldn‘t put it down! So far so good!

MicheleinPhilly This book sounds fun! And I‘m not even into sci-fi! 6y
