I'll Keep You Safe
I'll Keep You Safe: the sensational new Hebrides-set thriller | Peter May
10 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
** FROM THE GLOBALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF COFFIN ROAD AND THE BLACKHOUSE ** ** AN EXPLOSIVE NEW THRILLER SET IN THE OUTER HEBRIDES ** 'Peter May is an author I'd follow to the ends of the earth' New York Times Husband and wife Niamh and Ruairidh Macfarlane co-own Ranish Tweed: a Hebridean company that weaves its own special variety of Harris cloth, which has become a sought-after brand in the world of high fashion. But when Niamh learns of Ruairidh's affair with Russian designer Irina Vetrov, then witnesses the pair killed by a car bomb in Paris, her life is left in ruins. Along with her husband's remains, she returns home to the Isle of Lewis, bereft. The Paris police have ruled out terrorism, and ruled in murder - making Niamh the prime suspect, along with Irina's missing husband, Georgi. And so French Detective Sylvie Braque is sent to the island to look into Niamh's past, unaware of the dangers that await her. As Braque digs deeper into the couple's history, Niamh herself replays her life with Ruiairidh, searching her memory for those whose grievances might have led to murder. And with each layer revealed, and every unexpected twist uncovered, the two women find themselves drawn inexorably closer to a killer who will not turn back.

Spent the day in Boston. Visited a used bookstore, Commonwealth Books and bought the tagged book.

While waiting for the train at South Station, sat at TITS and got a glass of wine and started book. Now reading it on the train.

Pruzy TITS? 8mo

CourtneyA That‘s the kind of cover that would make me buy a book 😁 it just screams gritty, atmospheric, Scottish suspense 8mo

Peter May is one of my favorite authors. I love his evocative writing style and the way he brings the Outer Hebrides to life. This book was no exception and I did not want to set it aside-I finished in two short days. Why the So-So rating? I didn‘t connect with his characters and never really cared about most of them. Plus, the ending was unsatisfying. I still think it a must read for his fans, but do not recommend this as an intro to the author.

Bluebird Ack! I‘m so conflicted about this one! 3y

My #bookspin choice, just in time! I liked most of it but it didn‘t match up to the previous Peter May‘s I‘ve read.

Nobody on Litsy has liked this book! Haven‘t read it yet, but I love Peter May. Help me out here, @Andrew65

Andrew65 I see what you mean, and it has a lower rating on Goodreads (3.64) than you‘d expect for one of his books. I haven‘t read this yet but I do see on Goodreads that @eadieb gave it a 5 star rating when she read it last year. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I enjoyed it and I loved his writing! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I certainly still intend reading it, and all his other books. A go to author for me. @Tove_Reads 5y
Tove_Reads @eadieb @andrew65 He is Indeed one of the best! Probably in my Top 10! 5y

Bailedbailed

Scheduling conflicts resulted in one day jobs moved to next week, with following up on emails from home which means lots of time to read this week! So frustrated I had to bail on this as setting was great (Hebrides, Paris); beginning /premise was promising, but cardboard characters and just unreadable. Sorry but waste of time for me.

Balibee146 @TrishB quick question.... I take it that it is, far better to read the Bosch books in order? I have a few now, mostly my dad's, but later ones....?? Ta x x 6y
TrishB Always 😁 there is always a link to his personal going‘s on - if that doesn‘t bother you? I can‘t read a series out of order.... 6y

I shall be spending a week on Lewis in May and what better way to start off my #holidayreading #tbr pile than with a book set in Lewis by a man called May!!

Give me all the dark, gorgeous atmospheric descriptions; the non Native English-speaking characters who have trouble with idioms; a touch of realism!
Do NOT give me dragging/pointless backstory that bury the mystery. Lack of any feeling about the MCs (except the Parisian Inspector) made reading this difficult.

And that unrealistic, unsatisfying ending! 😡

I was sent a paperback ARC in for an honest review. This in no way affects my opinions.
