Good Bones
Good Bones | Maggie Smith
19 posts | 12 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
Featuring "Good Bones" --called "Official Poem of 2016" by the BBC/Public Radio International. Maggie Smith writes out of the experience of motherhood, inspired by watching her own children read the world like a book they've just opened, knowing nothing of the characters or plot. These are poems that stare down darkness while cultivating and sustaining possibility, poems that have a sense of moral gravitas, personal urgency, and the ability to address a larger world.

Book #13 of 2024: “Good Bones” by Maggie Smith

You‘ve probably read the poem “Good Bones”. This is its eponymous book. It wasn‘t my favorite collection of poetry but I enjoyed the imagery of a remote life in the mountains.

Pickpick

This collection of poems about the experience of motherhood was sort of a mixed bag. I found the first part not particularly compelling, but the second half had some real gems. Good Bones, of course, being the standout. Panel Van, Dear, and Rain, New Year‘s Eve were especially poignant. But honestly, isn‘t that what reading poetry is like? Mining for gold, finding the particular piece that sings to you above the others?

Hestapleton This is the poem I read every time I get scared about bringing my son into this world. Even though it‘s scary and broken, he could make it beautiful. ❤️ 3y
StaceGhost I love this one too and @Hestapleton I do the same thing! There‘s a Wendell Berry poem about his children I love too 3y

A collection of poetry that shares the fierce, protective nature of motherhood and the anxiety that comes from living in this world. A few of these poems will sit in my soul for eternity, and thus I give it a pick.

BethFishReads I always think I should read more poetry. ... 7y
dastevensish @BethFishReads I tell myself that a lot too. And then every once in a great while, I actually listen to myself. 😉 7y
BethFishReads I really like novels in verse, but rarely sit down with a book of poems 7y

Maggie‘s poems wrecked me. An exploration into motherhood and life and the convergence and divergence of the two.
