Eustace Diamonds | Anthony Ed Trollope

The third in Trollope's six-volume Palliser series, The Eustace Diamonds boasts an extraordinary heroine in Lizzie Eustace, a lying schemer in the mould of Thackeray's Becky Sharp. A pompous Under-Secretary of State, an exploitative and acquisitive American and her unhappy "niece," a shady radical peer, and a brutal aristocrat are only some of the characters in this, one of Trollope's most engaging novels: part sensation fiction, part detective story, part political satire, and part ironic romance. It is also a highly revealing study of Victorian Britain, its colonial activities in Ireland and India, its veneration of wealth, and its pervasive dishonesty. In her introduction, Helen Small explores the central themes of lying and truth-telling, placing the novel within contemporary political and social debates. An invaluable appendix outlines the political context of the Palliser novels and establishes the internal chronology of the series and the relationship between fictional and actual political events, providing a unique understanding of the series as a linked narrative. In addition, the book includes a compact biography of Trollope and a wealth of explanatory notes. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

It‘s a quiet Friday evening for me. Watching new TV episodes, a pot of tea (Harney & Sons Victorian London Fog), and of course reading. Mr. S always laughs at how I spread out whilst reading - books, book journal, pens, highlighters (see picture above for reference). All that‘s missing is the hot beverage that‘s usually nearby. What are some of your reading essentials?

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Pretty pic 💗 6y
catebutler @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you! Hope you‘re having a wonderful Friday evening. 💕 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @catebutler thank you!! You too 💗 6y
BookBabe Lovely! Happy Friday! I am 100% with you on the tea (and that London Fog tea sounds enchanting!). ❤️ I also sometimes have a reading journal with me, along with a fountain pen (or two), and my smartphone so I can look up stuff: outfits, strange foods (like “calf‘s foot jelly”), translate from other languages, and look up big fancy words. 😊 6y
catebutler @BookBabe I see we both committed to a full weekend of reading, yay! 🤓 Earl Grey is one of my all time favourite teas, and this London Fog is a delicious twist, it tastes and smells divine! I love that you‘re a fellow fountain pen user, there‘s something special about writing with one. 🖊 We really are kindred spirits! I‘m constantly looking up words or passages to learn more about what I just read! 6y

Fred (my manaTEA tea infuser) and I are reading in bed today. It seems I‘ve been hit with the ague, so it‘s a full box of tissues, ginger tangerine tea and a fat novel. I‘ve also been enjoying a rewatch of a favourite British TV comedy, ‘As Time Goes By‘. Even though it‘s a bit older, it‘s a goodie, and I recently saw that PBS is still showing an episode or two after 10PM. It‘s up there with ‘Vicar of Dibley‘ and ‘Keeping Up Appearances‘.

Tamra Vicar of Dibley, perfect prescription! 6y
Spencer_Labbe Omg Fred is brilliant 😂 6y
catebutler @Tamra It always makes you feel better doesn‘t it!! 😊 6y

catebutler @Emilymdxn It never fails to make me smile! And that‘s very true, I love, but hate sick days, it‘s always the perfect excuse to stay in bed all day and read. 6y
BiblioLitten Fred is the cutest!! I hope you feel better soon. 💕 6y
AmyG Feel better! 6y

batsy I'm going to look up all of those TV shows. Can't get enough British TV, tbh :) I hope you feel better soon! 6y
catebutler @batsy Yay! All are from the 90‘s, but still so much fun. Love finding a fellow Anglophile. 😊 (edited) 6y

It‘s, ‘The Eustace Diamonds‘, this evening with a side of homemade chicken fried rice & freshly baked croissants. On cold winter nights, cooking/baking is my absolute favourite. I‘ll usually put on a podcast or audiobook whilst clattering around the kitchen, & I find any stress instantly melt away. After dinner (& a movie), I‘ll finish up the evening with, ‘Magic for Marigold‘ by L. M. Montgomery.

Life‘s gotten away from me recently, but I finally feel my little world is righting itself. I‘ve indulged a favourite pastime on these cold winter days - reading a fat novel. ‘The Eustace Diamonds‘ has been a sheer delight! I‘ve mapped out three chapters a day in order to finish by the end of the month, but each night when I tuck into bed with this book (& a generous portion of Cadbury fruit & nut bar), I find it difficult to stop at just three!

hilded What a beautiful picture 😍 6y
glitterkitty459 Lovely 😍😍😍 6y
BarbaraBB Oh great! Have you read the two earlier Palliser books as well? 6y

catebutler @hilded Thank you, Hilde! Hope you‘re having a great Tuesday!! 💓 (edited) 6y
catebutler @glitterkitty459 Thank you! 😊👋🏼 6y
catebutler @BarbaraBB I have! And all the novels in the Barsetshire series. I adore Trollope! I‘ve been reading these novels with a group on IG, we‘ve loved discussing each one! I think this one is my favourite in the Palliser series. Lady Eustace is such a fun (and very wicked) character. 6y
catebutler @Betty It‘s always fun to indulge in a bit of Cadbury chocolate, especially whilst reading a good book! 6y
BiblioLitten Such a pretty picture! 💚💕 Good to have you back.😊 6y
batsy A Victorian classic + chocolate... What could be more perfect. 6y
catebutler @BiblioLitten Thank you, Archana! It‘s so nice to be back, thank you for the warm welcome back! 💓 6y
catebutler @batsy Not much else! It‘s fun to indulge on occasion, especially cozied up in bed. 😊 6y
RealLifeReading Beautiful photo! 6y
BarbaraBB @catebutler That is good to know! I was a bit put off by Phineas Finn (all those politics) but I love Trollope‘s female characters in general so I will proceed with this one 💕 6y
catebutler @RealLifeReading Thank you, Sharlene! 😊👋🏼 6y
catebutler @BarbaraBB I was too, I actually really got bogged down with PF, this one has been so different and the female characters are phenomenal - so much to love with each one. A few of the readers in our group are listening to the audiobook and they say it‘s superb! I‘ll try to find out who the narrator is. So maybe check that out, if you‘re an audio reader too! (edited) 6y
catebutler @BarbaraBB I just found the narrator and have linked the audiobook below: https://www.amazon.com/The-Eustace-Diamonds/dp/B003VXK85A 6y
BarbaraBB Thank you so much! I‘ll make sure to check that out and am glad you didn‘t like PF much either. 6y
catebutler @BarbaraBB I‘d love to hear what you think once you pick it up! 💓 6y
BarbaraBB I‘ll let you know and in the mean time will follow your thoughts! 6y

Lady Eustace is one of those main characters you love to hate. Enjoyed this, especially the narrator.

"No darling, of course I'm not in the process of committing fraud."

My favourite book in the Palliser chronicles series. Lizzie Eustace is scheming, hilarious and despite everything, lovable. And she is back as a minor character in Phineas Redux.
