Stash of One's Own: Knitters on Loving, Living With, and Letting Go of Yarn
Stash of One's Own: Knitters on Loving, Living With, and Letting Go of Yarn | Clara Parkes
14 posts | 13 read | 10 to read
From New York Times bestselling knitting writer Clara Parkes, comes a new collection of essays and stories drawn from the yarn-loving, stash-collecting, close-knit community of knitters. This addictive-to-read anthology celebrates yarn--specifically, the knitter's reputation for acquiring it in large quantities and storing it away in what's lovingly referred to as a "stash." Consider contributions from knitting and teaching luminaries, including: Stitch 'n Bitch co-founder Debbie Stoller Meg Swansen, daughter of master knitter Elizabeth Zimmermann Knitting blogger and author Susan B. Anderson alongside offerings from knitting greats Amy Herzog, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, and Franklin Habit--plus, stories from a romance novelist, an illustrator, a PhD-wielding feminist publisher, a globetrotting textile artist, a licensed clinical social worker, and the people behind the world's largest collective online stash, Ravelry.com. The pieces range from comical to earnest, lighthearted to deeply philosophical as each seeks to answer the question of how the stash a knitter has accumulated over the years reflects his or her place in universe. The stories in A Stash of One's Own represent and provide validation for knitters' wildly varying perspectives on yarn, from holding zero stash, to stash-busting, to stockpiling masses of it--and even including it in estate plans. These tales are for all fiber artists, spinners, dyers, crafters, crocheters, sheep farmers, shop owners, beginning knitters to yarn experts, and everyone who has ever loved a skein too hard to let it go.

Great read! A collector of anything will relate to these essays. You don‘t have to be a knitter. 🧶

For my new found obsession! 🧶

It isn‘t the only reason I‘ve been MIA from Litsy. I‘m halfway through a master‘s capstone seminar I started last month, so I‘ve been occupied. Light at the end of the tunnel! 😅

Ruthiella I‘m impressed that you are doing a master‘s program on top of everything else you do! 👍 2y
Tamra @Ruthiella well, it‘s fulfilling but a struggle at times for sure. I‘m looking forward to having more time to do whatever I feel like doing. 🤓 2y
kspenmoll I have a knitting friend who would live this book! Getting a Masters is all consuming! 2y

MaureenMc 👏👏👏 2y
Tamra @kspenmoll there are others too mentioned on the back flap , Knitlandia and The Yarnwhisperer! Yes, it really is - especially when the courses are only 8 weeks. 2y
Tamra @Cathythoughts I like the idea of warrior woman! Seems that‘s what we all have to be these days. 2y
Tamra @batsy thank you! 😘 (edited) 2y
Tamra @MaureenMc 😄 Do you knit too? 2y
MaureenMc @Tamra Sadly, no. But I aspire to be crafty and admire all those who are! 😄 2y
Tamra @MaureenMc I started with a YouTube tutorial for a dishcloth and was hooked! Try it with a single skein of 100% cotton yarn and YouTube - you can do it! I love to be an enabler. 😆 2y

The best review I can give this is that it inspired me to pick up my knitting again after several months of slump...! As with any collection, the essays are uneven; the best ones are concrete stories rather than generalized musings. There‘s enough texture in the collection not to get (too) samey. A nice read and would make a good gift.

This was a great before-bed read. I read an essay or two a night and made my way through the book over a few weeks. The collection featured a lot of stories that echoed my own experiences, so it really resonated with me. My knitting journey was and is closely tied to the loss of my mom, and it was so helpful to know that I am not alone in my experience.

I‘m thinking of purchasing this book because I would love to join the knitting community and feel that connection, which I know this book touches on. I crochet but was needing something that is easier on my arthritic hands. Can anyone recommend any resources for a newbie who happens to also be a leftie?

Magslhalliday My first book was Cute and Easy - it includes a how to section and has a mitten pattern that is very easy. I must admit I tend to use YouTube or my local knitting shop for most "how to" fixes. 7y
EvieBee @Magslhalliday Thank you so much! I‘ll be checking it out!! We don‘t have a shop in my town, but I didn‘t even consider YouTube. That seems a given! 7y
Magslhalliday I was taught basic by my mum, and only got back into it in the last few years - YouTube is wonderful!!! Especially if it's an American notation and I'm thinking "what the...?". 7y

Michelle_mck My Mum is a leftie - I just started knitting this year and YouTube has been great - very pink knits for general stuff - I am going to a continental workshop next week, lots of left handed people swear buy it and it minimises movement so good for arthritis Etc 7y
Michelle_mck Oh and I want that book so much 7y
Valink I think the knittinghelp.com website has instructions for lefties and righties. I joined a knitting group about a year ago and I absolutely love being part of the group! We also all happen to be sailors so we are the only knitting group I know of that also races sailboats together! 7y
silentrequiem Are you on ravelry? There has to be a lefty knitters group on there! 7y
EvieBee @Michelle_mck Thank you so much!!! How exciting for you! I think this book needs to be part of your library for sure. 7y
EvieBee @Valink That is awesome! I wish I could find a group that met in my town IRL! I feel like it would make the experience even better! Although I am one of those loner learners lol 7y
EvieBee @silentrequiem I‘ve never heard of it! Googling now! Thank you ❤️ 7y
