A pretty good follow up to the first book. Giving lots of room for the fact this takes place in the 1930s, written in the 1970s, I was let down by the lack of Helen in his stories. Another woman (married) had more presence than Herriot's wife which is sad. The first book set her up to be just as interesting as the main character. Anyway, the stories were still good, full of humor and dark realities.

While the third season comes for its BBC series, I just bought the second book of James Herriot's heartwarming All Creatures Great and Small. A little secret, though, I haven't finished the first book yet. Feeling so hard to keep up! 😄

These books might be the sweetest ever written. James Herriot recounts his Yorkshire Vet work in early marriage, and before leaving serve in WWII. My one critique is that I hope Helen, his wife, is more present in the next book. She is lovingly, but sparingly, depicted as a doting wife, but with little of her own personality, unlike the strong male characters. I put in a little time on my diamond painting (and with ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL) while I drank my coffee. #20in4 #audiocrafting

I made a good start on the tagged book while I cooked supper. So far, I‘m enjoying it just as much as ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL!

It took me to 11:28 for #20in4. I haven‘t managed much with-eyeballs reading time, mostly because yesterday‘s promising freebie didn‘t grip me as the story built, but I listened to all of BLACK IMAGINATION (which was excellent) before I dove into this one. #audiocooking

Just as wonderful as the first one! Clearly, someone had told Herriot that they enjoyed the romance between him and his wife so there was more reminiscing about their courtship, but otherwise it was chock full of lovely stories about lovely people and their lovely animals. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Deifio Oh, I just love these books! Did you watch the TV series way back when, too? 4y
veritysalter I simply love these books, I‘ve read them many times. I keep meaning to visit The World of James Herriot in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, not too far from me. Alf Wright‘s son, Peter Wight (The Yorkshire Vet) is a regular at our village open farm. 4y

So tonight I made my recording debut. 🎤 With research showing that singing can spread COVID-19 as much as coughing, our church is prerecording all the music in advance for the live-streamed service. This Sunday it‘s just my husband and me singing until we get the tech (and time) to blend the whole choir. Book is tagged because that‘s one of the hymns I recorded - not a comment on my looks! 🤓

Bookwormjillk That‘s really cool! 5y
sprainedbrain How fun! 5y
Lcsmcat @Bookwormjillk @sprainedbrain It‘s so much harder than singing together. You lose that sense of communication between performers. But it‘s better than not having music, or making people sick. 5y

barbwire It can be a comment on your looks, because you‘re still my cousin whom I miss seeing in person. It can also apply to your bright and beautiful voice, which I can hear in my mind‘s ear. So glad y‘all will be singing for Sunday‘s service. 5y

Lcsmcat @barbwire 🥰 We can always use Cousin Barb on alto. Figure out your “recording studio” and Rusty can edit you in for future Sundays. 5y

I‘m in the middle of several new books, but sometimes sinking into the slightly battered pages of a beloved old friend for a little while is marvelous.

StellarDoc Welcome to Litsy! 🙂 6y

StellarDoc @alayarachel I love the fact that your first post has the very essence of Litsy: book + furchild. 6y
alayarachel @StellarDoc hah, yes! I‘m trying to do the thing right! All my reading happens with my fur people in close proximity. 6y

Oy! When you mess up the title by one word and end up with an entirely random book 😐
Yep, totally meant to search for All Things Bright and STRANGE....hmmm ...should I listen to this anyway? Does the universe have my back on this?

Colour me random. My reading this month has been "eclectic," to say the least. ?
Also heavily anglophile.???? Must be all that Royal wedding buzz.

I'm only telling a few people ahead of time. My husband, my mother, my best friend, my daughters' school. And you, my Littens. Amy hasn't been doing well lately. She was supposed to have surgery to remove a skin mass today, but we began to feel she wasn't a good candidate for surgery. Instead, the vet opted for a full body X-ray. We discovered the reasons for her shallow breathing and intermittent cough. 👇🏻

mrsmarch Several large tumors in her chest are pressing on her heart and lungs, complicating her breathing and making regular life very hard. We expect we will be saying goodbye to her very soon. 7y

#Shelfie #riotgram This is my view from my LR couch wintertime reading spot. There are many themes going on here! Music, favorites, recent reads, books that became films, series, etc. Seems like a real mish-mash, but it makes sense to me. 🤗❤📚
