Never Broken
Never Broken: Songs are Only Half the Story | Jewel
Multi-platinum singer-songwriter Jewel explores her unconventional upbringing and extraordinary life in an inspirational memoir that covers her childhood to fame, marriage and motherhood. In Never Broken she reflects on how she survived instability, abuse and trauma, and how writing songs, poetry and prose has saved her life many times over. She writes lyrically about the natural wonders of Alaska, about pain and loss, about the healing power of motherhood and about discovering her own identity years after the entire world had discovered the beauty of her songs.

I really liked her story for the first half. She had a challenging life in poverty with a mother who left the family early and a lot of hard times with a father who had had his own demons. I liked her self reflection and her being true to herself and good advice about self love etc. The second half was harder to read. She let her mom use her, still trying to get her love, and ignored finances etc. I was impatient for things to get better.

Excellent memoir! I am only maybe 1.34% as self-aware as Jewel, turns out, tho 🙄

I never tire of learning about the bigger picture, especially when it comes to the humans to whom we have been given only specific, carefully-marketed or brutally-vilified exposure.

I have yet to read a famous person‘s story that made me desire fame.

The audio version is wonderful for reasons you may guess! Her reading voice is as lovely as her singing voice. 🎶

A memoir of singer/songwriter/actress Jewel who grew up with her father among what she describes as “growing up always camping”and a divorced, hippie, manipulative mother. It is her journey both inward and outward of performing, singing, struggling with finances and relationships to her current mature outlook as a single divorced mother. Jewel is as resilient as they get & this memoir is well worth reading for those on their own journeys.

Jewel is one of my favorite artists and when I picked this book up I was unable to put it down. I may have to pick it up for a reread soon.

I accidentally ordered some books from ThriftBooks. It was after midnight when I selected these and I feel I cannot be held responsible for choices made after midnight. That‘s a fair defense, right?

What are your favorite sources for secondhand books? Locally, I love The Dog Eared Book, The Corner Bookstore, thrift stores, and library book sales. If I purchase them online, I typically shop eBay or ThriftBooks.

diovival Library book sales. One of my favorites is coming up soon. 😍 5y
abookishbutterfly @diovival I told myself I would ONLY go to my favorite one this year because I completely lose control at those library book sales and already have so many books to read. But we have one coming up here, too, and even though it isn‘t my favorite one... fighting the temptation hurts! 5y
Crazeedi I buy good used books from various sites, also my library, though being a small one, choices are limited 5y
diovival @Butterflyamore They are so hard to resist! 5y
robinb Thriftbooks is my go-to as well. Enjoy! 5y

Equal parts memoir and self-help, Jewel keeps it raw and real. It‘s especially good as an audiobook, as Jewel reads (and occasionally sings) her own story. She‘s incredibly inspiring. This book has earned a permanent spot in my library.

I listened to this book which awarded me her singing. Jewel has had a rough life with parents that didn't know how to show her love. She worked hard for everything and learned to love herself and to forgive.

Belated #FunFridayPhoto! This is one of those picks that might have to do with nostalgia more than anything. I listened to Jewel's memoir because she's been one of my favorite singers since I was a teen. I remember carting her music around on my turquoise CD player in the '90s. :p. "Barcelona" is my fave song, and I tie my love of her female folk to my mom's fave singers from the '60s and '70s. But read this for her singular experiences, too.

This book impressed me. Jewel is candid about her past, mentioning in the Afterword notes that she hopes people may find help in what she has been through. I had no idea of her past personal traumas, but I can see where she has poured her life experiences into her songs + poetry.

I especially loved reading about her Alaskan childhood-so different than my life here in NC. Bonus: Jewel sings + reads some of her poetry!

Audio: Jewel narrates ✔️✔️✔️

*sigh sigh sigh* Why does this happen so often? 🙄🙄🙄

This memoir is great, by the way. I thought I would power thru it like I do with some, but there are some meaty thoughts in here. I wish I had a paper copy to highlight and underline.

This is my #currentlyreading memoir to listen to while I work. Read by the author.
