Two Stories
Two Stories | Mark Haddon, Virginia Woolf
5 posts | 1 read
Virginia Woolf was one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. With her husband, Leonard Woolf, she started the Hogarth Press in 1917: the list ranged widely in fiction, poetry, politics and psychoanalysis, and published all Virginia Woolfs own work. Its first publication appeared in 2017: Two Stories, bound in bright Japanese paper, contained a short story from both Virginia and Leonard. Typeset and bound by Virginia, with illustrations by Dora Carrington, 134 copies were printed by Leonard using a small handpress installed in the dining room at Hogarth House, Richmond. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Publication No. 1 this new edition of Two Stories takes the original text of Virginias story, The Mark on the Wall (with illustrations by Dora Carrington), and pairs it with a new story, St Brides Bay, by Mark Haddon, a lifelong reader of Virginia Woolf. TWO STORIES also includes a portrait of Virginia Woolf by Mark Haddon, and a short introduction from the publisher about the founding of the Press.

Pickpick

Originally Two Stories consisted of “Three Jews” by Leonard and “The Mark on the Wall” by Virginia.

Who knew that it was possible to get so many thoughts from looking at a mark on the wall? In the introduction to the story it said that this is when we first see the author Virginia is to become and I can see that.

This edition contains a story by Mark Haddon titled “St Brides Bay” which seems to mirror Virginia‘s writing style.

AllDebooks I have this edition, too. I found it so absorbing and so relaxing to read, just letting my thoughts drfit with hers. 1mo
AnneCecilie @AllDebooks That‘s also a little dangerous. I will read and get lost in what I read and I stop and think “what did I just read?” and then I have to read it again 1mo
AllDebooks @AnneCecilie True 😅 1mo

#VirginiaBloomsberries September #buddyread is Two Stories. This is her 2nd publication from 1917. It was published by The Hogarth Press, set up by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. I'm reading the centennial copy with a commisioned essay by Mark Haddon.
A discussion thread will be posted at the end of the month.

AllDebooks @Librarybelle it's much shorter, thankfully. I'll keep alternating as her work does need concentrated reading. 3mo
Librarybelle I just did not budget my time with Voyage—enjoying it so far! 3mo
IndoorDame Can you take me off the tag list? I was eager to try reading with you all last month since I‘m definitely planning to read more Wolf this year, but I‘m just not up to group reads right now. I‘ll take a look at what everyone thought about The Voyage Out whenever I manage to pick it up. 3mo
AllDebooks @IndoorDame of course. No problem. 😊 3mo
kspenmoll I am still in The Voyage. Where did you find the short story? I am having trouble locating. 3mo
AllDebooks @kspenmoll I got my copy secondhand via Amazon 3mo
