Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore. Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

Amy has ripped my insides out once again!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭😭😭 When you read a book that is forever embedded in you, you don‘t just walk away from it unscathed. Faith is put to the test, friendships are on the line, and the value of family is in the forefront. This quiet story was full of compassion, the search of pride, definition of beauty, and what a strong community looks like. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟+

Book 45 ⭐⭐

I listened to Making Faces by Amy Harmon--a simplistic love and coming-of-age story with blatant references to the theme of beauty being deeper than face-value. Not reccomendable.

It isn't often that a story moves me to tears by beautifully strung of words that pull out so much emotion. Fern and Ambrose have been on parallel paths that at times were so close in distance then to drift so far apart. Individual heartbreak and guilt lead to a collision that helped each cope and find peace on their journey way forward.

A book blogging friend read this several years ago & it has languished on the TBR ever since. When I got it from the library, I honestly almost didn't read it because I am not usually into books with shirtless men on the cover. HOWEVER this is honestly not a romance novel, although romance is part of the story. It's about a small group of people who were seniors in high school when 9/11 happened. Consequently several guys decided to join the ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Army when they graduate, but only one of them comes back from Iraq. This story is about loss, beauty, hope, love, friendship, and faith. It flirts with the sappy line & some people may find it to be a little too much, but I honestly enjoyed it despite it not being my usual type of book. One thing that I really appreciated about this book was that Fern is a Christian & the daughter of a pastor & she actually just quietly lives what ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) she believes. It's very trendy in modern fiction to make sure that all Christians are actually portrayed as hypocritical jerks & while Fern isn't preachy (& I'm not sure if Jesus is specifically mentioned at all - there's definitely no “gospel tract“ moment), her faith is an important part of who she is & why she lives the way she does.

Anyway, all that to say that this book actually made me cry, which doesn't happen very often & it's ⬇
4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) a story that will be on my mind for a while. 4y

This is listed as a romance, but I feel like it‘s much more than that. This book is much more emotional than I usually read. It‘s a #soldiersstory, plus has a character that has muscular dystrophy and one that is being abused. I liked the way the story began before the solider went to war, spent a little time with him during the war and then mostly focused on the aftermath and dealing with tragedy. #booked2019

There were many quotes in this story that I loved but I think I'll stick with a classic from Shakespeare.
"The robbed that smiles steals something from the thief."

Beautiful story. So much depth. I was consumed with so many emotions and wisdom. ❤❤

Amy Harmon was a new discovery for me. This book secured her spot on my reading list.

It‘s a love story, but not exactly a romance. There‘s a girl who loves a boy, a small town that loves their kids, a Pastor who loves his flock, a group of lifelong pals, teammates and soldiers, who love each other and their country, and a girl who loves her imperfect friends but doesn‘t quite love herself.

It‘s not all love but heartache too. Be prepared.

Have you ever stared at a painting so long that the colors blur and you can‘t tell what you‘re looking at anymore? There‘s no form, face, or shape—just color, just swirls of paint? ... I think people are like that. When you really look at them, you stop seeing ... the acne scar or the dimple in the chin. Those things start to blur, and suddenly you see them, the colors, the life inside the shell, and beauty takes on a whole new meaning.

Soubhiville Beautiful! Welcome to Litsy! 6y

2 books in 2 days. Both based on male characters that were disfigured from war, just different time periods... What are the odds!

I read this for an online booj club read. Not one I would have thought to pick up on my own. Loved it. Makes you think about true beauty and what in your own life leads you to be who you are. Highly recommend.

It‘s contemporary romance with a healthy dose of realistic fiction, a cup of tears and mixed with lovely characters and a very important topic. I basically loved everything about it and this story has confirmed Amy Harmon is one of my new favorite authors.

I really loved the relationship between Fern and Bailey. It was so touching how they took care of each other. So many great characters. This book has a lot to say about life, death and grief. It is very touching and I'm glad it was recommended.

Three faces stared back at Ambrose from the glass. He registered his father‘s face first, a mask of despair just behind his right shoulder, and then he saw his own face, gaunt and swollen, but still recognizable. But merged with the recognizable half of his reflection was a pulpy, misshapen mess of ruined skin, Frankenstein stitching, and missingparts—someone Ambrose didn‘t know at all.

This is beautiful and an ugly cry book for me. So emotionally disturbing and uplifting at the same time. I don't think I can find the right words about how I feel. I felt constantly choked up, my heart squeezing, my throat clogged up. The words were just so beautiful together that it pulled me in, making me feel what they were feeling, making me hurt with them, making me laugh when they were happy, making me sad when they were hurting.

Oh my gosh. This book is so heavy on an emotional level. I cried the last quarter of the book from the awful events in the story that lead to a happy ending. Make sure you have a box of tissue with you if you read this!

This is my second book of the author and the first time wasn't so good (it wasn't bad but I wasn't in love) but this time I totally liked it. I loved the chatacters: Ambrose, Bailey and Fern are fantastic and the story was really compelling!

And so we endure. We have faith that there is purpose. We hope for things we can‘t see. We believe there are lessons in loss, power in love, and that we have within us the potential for a beauty so magnificent, our bodies can‘t contain it.
