Hero Ain't Nothin But a Sandwich | Alice Childress

I remember reading this book back in 2016 and 2017 time frame. Definition of a classic indeed. This is a story ahead of its time. Benji, the young protagonist in this story is dealing with being addicted to heroin. The people close to him are fighting to save him. As I read this novel, I couldn't help but to move with the story. Benji gave me inspiration to write about young black men dealing with the obstacles of life. Recommended Reading List

A Hero Ain't Nothin But a Sandwich | Alice Childress

This plaque in honor of Dr Alice Childress, author and playwright, used to be in front of a tree near the public school. A few months ago the tree mysteriously disappeared. They have just moved the plaque about a quarter mile down the street in front of another tree. She died before I moved to this area so I never met her but I loved A Hero Ain't Nothing But a Sandwich when I was a teen in the 70s.
