All the Little Children
All the Little Children | Jo Furniss
When a family camping trip takes a dark turn, how far will one mother go to keep her family safe? Struggling with working-mother guilt, Marlene Greene hopes a camping trip in the forest will provide quality time with her three young children—until they see fires in the distance, columns of smoke distorting the sweeping view. Overnight, all communication with the outside world is lost. Knowing something terrible has happened, Marlene suspects that the isolation of the remote campsite is all that’s protecting her family. But the arrival of a lost boy reveals they are not alone in the woods, and as the unfolding disaster ravages the land, more youngsters seek refuge under her wing. The lives of her own children aren’t the only ones at stake. When their sanctuary is threatened, Marlene faces the mother of all dilemmas: Should she save her own kids or try to save them all?

Marlene is not the most likable person, but truthfully, I don't know if I would have done any better than her in the beginning. Why are they alive when so many others are not. They are close enough to a town that proximity should not have had any bearing on whether they lived or died. And WTF was that ending. Marlene did not come across as noble, just stupid. It ruined the book for me.

Nopes. Something was just off with this book from start to finish. The mother is not very believable, and her character‘s transformation just makes it feel like you‘re reading about different people. Is the point of the book that we should realize together with her that her children & not her career is the most important thing in life? I hate moralizing books, especially when they‘re also bad books. Also, the poetic metaphors were SO out of place.

WanderingBookaneer I got this recently as an Audible Daily Deal, but haven‘t gotten around to it. 7y
tricours @WanderingBookaneer same here! The narrator was not excellent. 7y

I liked this book up until the ending. I just don't like ambiguous endings. Tell me the complete story.

A surprisingly decent post-apocalypse story. A few twists kept it interesting, and though Marlene isn't entirely sympathetic she rallies at the end. The plot moves along nicely, but wraps up a little too neatly at the end. Even so, a fun way to spend my day. Not as good as Book of the Unnamed Midwife, but fun.

Reading this book is not helping my travel/conference nerves! I feel like I should be disaster planning just in case!

Donnasmiles Wondering if this is the one I should pick? What's your slant? 7y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards It was just okay. The main adult characters were hard to like, and I don't think it'll stay with me for long, but it does have a good suspenseful drive while you're reading it 7y
