A Shropshire Lad and Other Poems
A Shropshire Lad and Other Poems: The Collected Poems of A.E. Housman | A.E. Housman
15 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
A. E. Housman was one of the best-loved poets of his day, whose poems conjure up a potent and idyllic rural world imbued with a poignant sense of loss. They are expressed in simple rhythms, yet show a fine ear for the subtleties of metre and alliteration. His scope is wide - ranging from religious doubt to intense nostalgia for the countryside. This volume brings together 'A Shropshire Lad' (1896) and 'Last Poems' (1922), along with the posthumous selections 'More Poems' and 'Additional Poems', and three translations of extracts from Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides that display his mastery of Classical literature.

I love how the poet captures the longing and melancholy of leaving. Short but so full of feeling.

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.

Stinkiest of trees, the Bradford pear
Sheds reeking blossoms o'er my hair,
And stands about suburban lawns
Dropping pollen before the dawn.

Now of my fifty- something years,
I've missed many due to tears
And sneezes, running nose
Kept me inside, away from those.

And since to hide from awful trees
Steals a day from blooms and breeze,
Of Benedryl I shall partake
And then beat those stupid trees with rakes.

(Deepest apologies to A.E.Housman)

Aimeesue I really REALLY hate Bradford pear trees. They're awful. (edited) 6y

bookandbedandtea I love this because I too have one of these trees. I love the way it looks but the smell! It smells like dead fish. 🤢 I'm a good month away from the experience as spring comes late here. 6y
LeahBergen 😆😆😆 They‘re stinky?? I wonder if we have these in my part of Canada? 🤔 6y
batsy Ahahaha! 6y
Aimeesue @bookandbedandtea Exactly. We call them "stinky fish trees" as my son did when he was in preschool. They're horrible. 6y
Aimeesue @LeahBergen For your sake, I hope not! 6y
