On a tiny lighthouse island far from the rest of the world, a lonely hermit lives out his existence. Years spent on a deserted rocka lifetime, reallywith imagination his sole companion has made the lighthouse keeper something more than alone, something else entirely. For him, what lies beyond the horizon might be...nothing. And so, why not stay put? I‘m still mulling over this one! So much to ponder. I‘m thinking parts of this could be fantastic in the secondary classroom too. BTW, what makes a ‘good‘ graphic novel?!

Alone by Christophe Chabouté, translated from the French, is a graphic novel about difference and isolation. The man who lives alone in a lighthouse has lived there since birth, and the last 15 years of it completely alone. The images show the life around him and pieces of his daily life. I thought it was beautiful and I loved his dictionary ritual.

#booked2019 i looked at this list i uncertain abt graphic novel category but in the library i was drawn to this bk + loved the storytelling and the skill of the drawings. A simple tale about a hermit on a lighthouse who uses his dictionary to imagine the meaning in words, a fisherman in a small gesture engages with him. Definitely a genre i will try again and a bk that defied my knee jerk ideas.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Great review. That's the cool thing about book challenges. Sometimes we discover a genre we wouldn't have tried otherwise. 5y

This is a gorgeously illustrated book which tells the tale of 2 sea haulers and a mysterious man in a light house. Told almost entirely without words (only the fishermen speak), but saying volumes it‘s a delicious delightful story. Some of the dictionary definition scenes with one of the characters are humorous and sometimes tragic all at the same time. The ending gives a sense of hope and it‘s well worth taking the time to read this.

LitsyGetsGraphic Brilliant story and gorgeous illustrations ❤️ 7y

Double pick, 6 stars👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 this is powerful and dramatic graphic story about one man in solitude for 50+ years on a tiny island. He had only ONE (❗️)book and a little companion. It‘s about compassion, connection and second chances. The art is extraordinary and stunning. I am going to check out the author‘s second book as soon as it will be available at my library, and this book has a special place in my heart for sure ❤️❤️❤️
