The Border
The Border | Steve Schafer
9 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
One moment changed their lives forever. A band plays, glasses clink, and four teens sneak into the Mexican desert, the hum of celebration receding behind them. Crack. Crack. Crack. Not fireworksgunshots. The music stops. And Pato, Arbo, Marcos, and Gladys are powerless as the lives they once knew are taken from them. Then they are seen by the gunmen. They run. Except they have nowhere to go. The narcos responsible for their families' murders have put out a reward for the teens' capture. Staying in Mexico is certain death, but attempting to cross the border through an unforgiving desert may be as deadly as the secrets they are trying to escape...

I don‘t cry easily especially when reading. I get the sad feelings but crying is just not me. With that said, I ugly cried reading this book because of the fact that I know this is a real representation of what so many people and (yes children as well) go through all the time. Then to see all the hateful comments about those who cross is just awful. The book is so important for people to read and understand.

In the Border, four teens are on the run from the cartel that murdered their families, and getting across the US border is their only hope.

Really enjoyed this story about four Mexican teens trying to cross the border into the US. The characters were incredibly likeable and surprisingly relatable and I found myself really hoping they'd make it. It's fast paced and pretty harrowing at times but has a few lighter moments too. A great debut.

This book just wasn't for me. I spent the first 25% of this book thinking the MC was a woman (it was a male) and I still don't even know the MC's name! I found it slow and just struggled to get into the plot. Just not for me...
