John Ronald's Dragons: The Story of J. R. R. Tolkien
John Ronald's Dragons: The Story of J. R. R. Tolkien | Caroline McAlister

A captivating picture book biography of a boy who imagined a world full of dragons and grew up to be beloved author J. R. R. Tolkien.John Ronald loved dragons. He liked to imagine dragons when he was alone, and with his friends, and especially when life got hard or sad. After his mother died and he had to live with a cold-hearted aunt, he looked for dragons. He searched for them at his boarding school. And when he fought in a Great War, he felt as if terrible, destructive dragons were everywhere. But he never actually found one, until one day, when he was a grown man but still very much a boy at heart, when he decided to create one of his own. John Ronald's Dragons, a picture book biography by Caroline McAlister and illustrated by Eliza Wheeler, introduces the beloved creator of Middle Earth and author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to a new generation of children who see magic in the world around them.

That a lovely, basic biography of Tolkien. There wasn‘t much to the story, just a general timeline and his hunt for dragons, but it worked. And the soft watercolor style illustrations were a perfect counter to the historial words. I really liked how at the end the illustrator explained how and what they choose to illustrate.

Here‘s my V - visual aid for my #COVID19challenge - and what a gorgeously illustrated book! A very light bio of JRR Tolkien, focusing on his love for dragons, but skipping through his life. There‘s an extra bit of info at the end, which is nice, but it‘s the art that really stands out here. True Tolkien fans won‘t find anything new, but it‘s a beautiful book.

"At school John Ronald made good friends. The boys held secret parties in the library with tea and biscuits. The librarian scolded them for dropping crumbs on her books."

Excellent text; superb notes; good illustrations. Conclusion two-page spread of the dragon Smaug artfully unites text and picture.

I am not exaggerating when I say this childrens picture book about JRR Tolkien's life and love of dragons is MAGICAL. Simply told, gorgeous art, and enough backmatter to add some facts about him. Such as how the first dragon to spark his imagination was from Andrew Lang's Red Fairy Book. 🐉💚🐉

Merethebookgal Very cool! 7y
