Why Soccer Matters: A Look at More Than Sixty Years of International Soccer
Why Soccer Matters: A Look at More Than Sixty Years of International Soccer | Pelι
5 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
"I know in my heart that soccer was good to me, and great to the world....I saw, time and again, how the sport improved countless millions of lives, both on and off the field. For me, at least, that's why soccer matters." The world's most popular sport goes by many names--soccer, football, the beautiful game--but fans have always agreed on one thing: The greatest player of all time was Pele. During his twenty-year career, he was heralded as an international treasure, and his accomplishments on the field proved to be pure magic: an unprecedented three World Cup championships and the all-time scoring record, with 1,283 goals. Since retiring, he has traveled the world as soccer's global ambassador, relentlessly promoting the positive ways soccer can transform young men and women, struggling communities, even entire nations. Now, for the first time, the legendary star and humanitarian explores the sport's recent history and provides new insights into the game. With unparalleled openness, he shares his most inspiring experiences, heartwarming stories, and hard-won wisdom. This is Pele's legacy, his way of passing on everything he's learned and inspiring a new generation. In Why Soccer Matters, Pele details his ambitious goals for the future of the sport and, by extension, the world.

⚽️ Not book related - but I‘m so excited that I had to share. We just found out tonight that my younger son (14 yo), Keegan, made the 2005 Ohio South Youth Soccer Olympic Development Team (OSYSA ODP). He also made the team 2 years ago, but not last year ☹️. The team will compete against other USYSA Region 2 teams at the end of the month. #proud πŸ‘πŸ»πŸŽˆπŸŽ‰πŸ˜„βš½οΈ

Great read - funny and insightful. Not my favourite football memoir ever, but still really really good. ☺

For the past 3 years I've been working as a social media manager at the biggest football/soccer publication in Africa. It's been a fiercely rewarding experience and I've learned so much and grown so much too. I'm moving on to a new job that I know is going to challenge me in so many ways. #NowReading this book and will gift it to the company before I leave on Friday. Here's to new chapters - in books and in life! β˜ΊπŸ’œπŸŽ‰

DeborahSmall Well done. Is new job soccer/football related? My husbands work is in football development in youth and he's the head coach of a semi professional team in Northern Ireland's premier league. The only books he reads are football books. I have the last Pele book in my library but not this one. Good luck in your new job ❀️ 7y
haanim @DeborahSmall the new job is completely different, not football related at all! That's amazing! I love the game and I'm looking forward to enjoying it as a fan again, and it not being work anymore 😊 thank you! 7y
