I'd heard that Battle Tendency was a turning point for Jojo's from "strongest wins" battle manga to "battle of wits" adventure series. While I feel that sells short somewhat the quality of Part 1's pacing, B.T. is definitely a step up in the character writing department, and the plot is still as zany and engaging as ever. Will probably wait to start Part 3 until all the Viz omnibuses are out.
