How to Bee
How to Bee | Bren MacDibble
6 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
Sometimes bees get too big to be up in the branches, sometimes they fall and break their bones. This week both happened and Foreman said, 'Tomorrow we'll find two new bees.' Peony lives with her sister and grandfather on a fruit farm outside the city. In a world where real bees are extinct, the quickest, bravest kids climb the fruit trees and pollinate the flowers by hand. All Peony really wants is to be a bee. Life on the farm is a scrabble, but there is enough to eat and a place to sleep, and there is love. Then Peony's mother arrives to take her away from everything she has ever known, and all Peony's grit and quick thinking might not be enough to keep her safe. How To Bee is a beautiful and fierce novel for younger readers, and the voice of Peony will stay with you long after you read the last page.

4/5 This is a great story built around the actuality of a world without bees, such a devastating thought and a great way to reach kids about climate change. It touches on important themes for children like perseverance, family and love. Peony's spirit was so courageous! (Reccomended for ages 8-13)

It‘s been a crazy busy couple of days. My local CBCA branch in Qld hosted the annual book of the year awards on Friday, and these books were announced as winners of each category. (There‘s another award called the Crichton which is given out to best new illustrator. Sorry it‘s not in the picture). That night we had a dinner to celebrate and the next day, we held an event at our state library for children and young adults. I got to chair this panel

Missusb Con‘t that‘s me crouched in between Charlie Archbold, author of Mallee Boys (honour book), and the three authors of Take Three Girls, Simmone Howell, Cath Crowley and Fiona Wood. I am over tired, but proud of the small team of volunteers who worked to make this weekend a success. Yay for books. (edited) 6y

Loose-leaf Links is a feature where I gather together the interesting bits on SFF & romance I've found and share them with you over tea.

In today's news the Hugo Awards are now open for voting. Ticonderoga Publications are looking for stories for their Year's Best anthology. And Bren McDibble wins the Patricia Wrightson Prize for Children's Literature.

Bren MacDibble's HOW TO BEE is a middle grade novel that looks at what the future might be like if bees died out. It is both heartwrenching and hopeful, and very much deserves its Ditmar nomination for Best Novel.
