Ravensong - a Novel
Ravensong - a Novel | Lee Maracle
Set along the Pacific Northwest Coast in the 1950s, Ravensong tells the story of an urban Native community devastated by an influenza epidemic. Stacey, a 17-year-old Native girl, struggles with the clash between white society's values and her family's traditional ways, knowing that her future lies somewhere in between. Celia, her sister, has visions from the past, while Raven warns of an impending catastrophe before there is any reconciliation between the two cultures. In this passionate story about a young woman's quest for answers, author Lee Maracle speaks unflinchingly of the gulf between two cultures: a gulf that Raven says must be bridged. Ravensong is a moving drama that includes elements of prophecy, mythology, cultural critique, and even humour. Cover art by Columpa C. Bobb

Pickpick

RAVENSONG is going straight on my autorecs list. It's a masterclass in everyday cultural tension, seen through the eyes of a 17-year-old Indigenous girl in 1954. Maracle tackles issues surrounding sexuality, morality, familial bonds, food production, and so much more as her protagonist considers the line between her traditional community and the white town across the river. It's deep and elegant and an absolute must-read for all North Americans.

This afternoon I sat on a log and read a goodly chunk of RAVENSONG. It remains excellent.

Some early-morning reads while I wait for everyone else to get up. The pamphlet is today's Short Story Advent Calendar selection: an animal-focused creative nonfiction piece by Edmonton writer Thomas Wharton. RAVENSONG is my first Lee Maracle and it's blowing me away. I hope I can scrounge lots of time with it today.

Further adventures in bullet journals. Back when I was trying to distract myself from maybe-cancerous lumps, I combed through La TBR for purchased books under 275 pages and made a checklist to go with the one that focuses on short freebies. It's four pages long and gave me an excuse to use more washi and stickers.
