The Dying Game
The Dying Game: A Novel | Åsa Avdic
10 posts | 16 read | 39 to read
A masterly locked-room mystery set in a near-future Orwellian state The year is 2037, and on the tiny island of Isola, seven people have been selected to compete in a forty-eight-hour test for a top-secret intelligence position with the totalitarian Union of Friendship. One of them is Anna Francis, a workaholic bureaucrat with a nine-year-old daughter she rarely sees and a secret that haunts her. Her assignment: to stage her own death and then to observe, from her hiding place inside the walls of the house, how the six other candidates react to the news that a murderer is among them. Who will take control? Who will crack under pressure? But then a storm rolls in, the power goes out, and the real game begins. . . . Combining suspense, unexpected twists, psychological gamesmanship, and a sinister dystopian future, The Dying Game conjures a world in which one woman is forced to ask, “Can I save my life by staging my death?”

I didn't do quite as well as I'd hoped with #8intwo but I did finish Ace of Shades and read about 200 pages of The Dying Game by Asa Avdic, which is really fast-paced and great so far.

What a great read! This was an incredibly clever “who dunnit” - ish novel. It‘s set in the distant future and plays around with the idea of a post apocalyptic authoritarian state, but the entire plot could easily be transposed to any era. Great beach read/page turner. 4/5

#TBRtemptation post 5! Great embossed cover. The Most Dangerous Game meets 1984. A locked-room mystery set in an Orwellian future. 2037, the island of Isola, 7 people compete for a top-secret intelligence position with the Union of Friendship. Anna is the test--she fakes her death & watches the other 6 to see how they react to a killer in their midst. But a storm rolls in, the power goes off, & the real game begins. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

If you're looking for a novel that combines the best elements of The Most Dangerous Game and 1984, check out The Dying Game. You can't trust any of the characters and no situation is quite as it seems. But the creepiest part of the book is that you're never sure what the characters know, and there's a good chance that someone is always watching/controlling them. The mystery builds at a steady pace and the ending was almost a surprise.

I felt like this could have been so great, but it kind of fell short for me. I didn't feel like it was well developed and the plot had some pacing issues

Based on the concept of 'And Then There Were None' with a distinct style of its own. Very smartly written and keeps you at the edge of your seat! Pick it up. Expected - End August 2017.

Marla This was a good story. Lots of shocks. 7y
Theguywiththebook @Marla yes! And very nicely handled too! Loved it! 7y
