#adventrecommends Day 6
These are the first novels I read (besides things assigned in school) that were considered literature. Rabbit, Run, by John Updike, impressed me so much when I read it (I was about 16 at the time) that I promptly read the next three in short order. These are classics in the American Literature canon, but I bet it‘s been decades since I‘ve heard anyone speak of these novels, or for that matter, of John Updike.

Lcsmcat I need to read these. Thanks for the reminder. 6y

Babe is my prop. He likes to fool around 😁

LITTENS: anyone read one or all of these Updikes? Considering bringing these with me to England to slog through. Will appreciate all opinions. (I have a few e-books too like Almost Sisters, the Thousandth Floor, Underworld- Delillo)

Angelala007 You will want to buy a couple of books in England! Leave the Updike for when you return :) I bought a few while I was there because UK editions of books are fun 📚 ☕️ 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks I agree. I bought so many books in London it was shameful. 📚📚 7y
erinreads I've only read the first Rabbit book, but I enjoyed it! My husband is a huge Updike fan so I have the rest of the books waiting for me whenever I get around to them. (edited) 7y

ValerieAndBooks I've read all four Rabbit books, plus lots more of Updike 😊. If you really want to take him with you, just bring the first volume. The tetralogy is a lot to try to read in a relatively short time frame -- how long will you be in England? 7y
mrozzz @Angelala007 @CoffeeCatsBooks excellent advice. I'm going to bring an extra tote to carry on all my (likely) purchases. Now leaning towards this Joyce Carol Oates tome 7y
mrozzz @erinreads I'm excited and terrified to read Updike. Per @ValerieAndBooks maybe just volume 1 if it will fit in my bag lol And I will be there for one week and have a bunch of yours so I'd like to have a thick book handy without relying on book-shopping in case it comes later. 7y
BarbaraBB I read them amd they are nice but not very special. The usual stuff about a man in his midlife crisis. Certainly not the best Updike I read. I should take one, it is an easy read, not all of them. Reading them all might be boring...! 7y
mrozzz @BarbaraBB duly noted!!! 7y
MicheleinPhilly I've read the first 3 and couldn't imagine reading all 4 in one go. I say take the 1st volume, leave the 2nd. 7y
mrozzz @MicheleinPhilly 👍🏻 thanks! 7y
