The Water Beetles
The Water Beetles | Michael Kaan
21 posts | 4 read | 11 to read
The Leung family leads a life of secluded luxury in Hong Kong. But in December 1941, the Empire of Japan invades the colony. The family is quickly dragged into a spiral of violence, repression, and starvation. To survive, they entomb themselves and their friends in the Leung mansion. But this is only a temporary reprieve, and the Leungs are forced to send their children away. The youngest boy, Chung-Man, escapes with some of his siblings, and together they travel deep into the countryside to avoid the Japanese invaders. Thrown into a new world, Chung-Man befriends a young couple who yearn to break free of their rural life. But their friendship ends when the Japanese arrive, and Chung-Man is once again taken captive. Unwittingly and willingly, he enters a new cycle of violence and punishment until he finally breaks free from his captors and returns to Hong Kong. Deeply scarred, Chung-Man drifts along respectfully and dutifully, enveloped by the unspoken vestiges of war. It is only as he leaves home once again this time for university in America that he finally glimpses a way to keep living with his troubled and divided self. Written in restrained, yet beautiful and affecting prose, The Water Beetles is an engrossing story of adventure and survival. Based loosely on the diaries and stories of the author's father, this mesmerizing story captures the horror of war through the eyes of a child with unsettling and unerring grace. - 20160808"

The novel was not without its strengths, but I did do a double-take to see it's been nominated for the Canadian Governor-General's Award for fiction, announced just minutes ago. It is not nearly good enough to be receiving that kind of recognition - but still not as outrageous as Mohsin Hamid making the Booker short list, I guess.

shawnmooney @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled You're welcome! I am curious which parts or references (books?) resonated such that you would weigh in so emphatically. I don't think you've read The Water Beetles so it must be Exit West? 😍 7y

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled You guessed right - the acclaim of Exit West baffled me 7y
shawnmooney @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled If it wins the Booker my tantrum will be of epic proportions‼️ 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled We shall shake our fists together in our wrathful unity! 7y
Lindy That you feel so strongly about Exit West says something about its power. 7y
shawnmooney @Lindy Lol. I would say it says something about my discernment. 😻 7y
Lindy @shawnmooney Hmmm. I don't understand why Hamid's wonderful novel has elicited such strong dislike. (edited) 7y
shawnmooney @Lindy Because he can't write worth shit, maybe? 😘 A few well-read folks such as you and Simon liked it but I've got the majority on my side this timearound. If this piece of crap wins the Booker... but different strokes for different folks I guess! I haven't hated a writer this much since Brian Francis or Dan Brown. (edited) 7y

Mehso-so

In this tale—based on his father's memoir—Kaan chronicles the harrowing experiences of a Hong Kong boy trying to survive the Japanese invasion and WW2. Child narrators present pitfalls, but this point of view is deftly handled here. Too, there are many, many simply written scenes of much power. But the novel needed paring, shaping, and it sputters and stalls almost every time the prose grasps for metaphor, image, or more flowery language.

JazzFeathers Such a pity! I was expecting something more powerful 😰 7y

“In later years I understood that it was my father alone who straddled the two worlds of the British and the Chinese. Without him, and with his business held in trust and her older sons away at school, my mother felt herself little more than a village girl thrust out among strangers, and the strain of maintaining face in this unbuffered world was slowly wearing away at her confidence.”

The prose has been quite workmanlike, with the occasional sentence that sings. This, however, is the first truly awful sentence I have encountered. Oh my God!

#WaterBeetlesBuddyRead

KathyWheeler That is indeed awful. 7y
saresmoore Ack. 7y
AceOnRoam Surely his publisher would have advised against the use of orifice in any sentence. 7y

Booksnchill Glad you clarified- I read the quote and thought- oh my did that touch your soul???!yes- wow, editors needed!😱 7y
Richryan52 @shawnmooney I agree. That is rather awful 7y
LeahBergen I like the bit about "cloying ordinariness". It should have been (way) pared down to just that sentiment. There's a good story in here, though - ya think? 7y
shawnmooney @LeahBergen I was thinking that too: pared down, the passage could've captured something that's difficult to express about how people can cling ostrich-like to the quotidian when danger looms. When you say "in here," you mean the novel as a whole so far, or this particular passage? Whichever way you meant it, I agree with you! @saresmoore @suet624 The scene at the table a few pages later between a mother and her son is powerful & wrenching! 7y
LeahBergen @shawnmooney Yes! And I meant the novel, in general. I bit off a big chunk of it last night. 😉 7y
Suet624 Workmanlike prose - yup. That's a perfect description. You're in the honeymoon phase and the writing becomes even more workmanlike. Maybe there's a method to his madness in writing the way he does though. War is definitely hell. 7y

I've spent the last two days trying to figure out what to say about this book. I'm with @DGRachel - this book was very disappointing. I've looked at Goodreads reviews and don't have a clue what they found to be praiseworthy, and the tantalizing tidbit about a surprise ending was not to be. I've read war stories before - several of them as horrific as this one - but none of them have left me as disturbed as this one has.

saresmoore I should be able to start reading this tomorrow, but I am mentally preparing for it. 7y
Suet624 @saresmoore Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have tagged you. You haven't read it yet. 7y

Today I retreat from reading about the invasion of Hong Kong by the Japanese and head off to a wedding. My twin sons (now 28) are the best man and the officiant to Charlie, the monkey in the middle. Best friends since they were 4. Here's the problem with not labeling the photos of your identical twins - I can't tell you which one is Max and which one is Louie.

Suet624 Actually after careful consideration, and it means nothing to anyone else but me, I think Louie is on the left. 😀 7y
AlaMich Really? I always thought moms of twins could tell them apart with their eyes closed. Or something like that. 😉 7y
See All 19 Comments
Suet624 @AlaMich it's harder to differentiate in 24-year-old pictures when they wear exactly the same clothes. 😀 (edited) 7y
ValerieAndBooks Love this picture! I have best friends who are twin sisters; at my wedding one was a bridesmaid and the other was the sign language interpreter for the ceremony 😊. I can tell them apart (they are technically fraternal but look almost identical) but many people can't. Recently they were looking at their own baby/toddler pictures and even they couldn't tell which was which in a lot of them! 7y
Bookzombie 😂 about the pic! Sounds like you will have a lovely time. 7y
Cortg Great picture! My siblings are triplets, 2 boys and a girl. The boys are always hard to tell apart when they were younger. Everyone thought I was the 3rd because I had the same hair blond coloring and cut (yep, bowl cut) and my sister had long brown hair 😂 Love that these boys are still hanging tight! 7y
batsy I hope it's not weird that I'm so tickled by the fact that you can't tell younger them apart 😁 Great picture and a solid history of friendship. 7y
tpixie @Suet624 my boys are three years apart and I do not think they look alike. When I go back through old photos though, sometimes I have to look at them a little harder to figure out which one is which! 7y
tpixie Happy wedding! My son, who turns 29 today, is still friends with some of his grade school buddies! I think it's so awesome when people have these long-term friendships! 7y
shawnmooney ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 7y
Suet624 @ValerieAndBooks that's good to know that they couldn't tell which was which. 😂😂 when they were itty bitty we painted their toenails a different color so we could tell them apart. Those sleepless nights made us unsure if we'd mix them up! 7y
Suet624 @Bookzombie We did. The boys did an amazing job in each of their roles at the wedding. And it's always fun to see little kids when they grow up and become adults. 7y
Suet624 @Cortg Oh boy, to be the sibling of triplets. Yowzer. I can't imagine how that was for you or your parents. Total chaos? 7y
Suet624 @batsy Not weird at all!!! As far as friendships go, they have a group of 15 kids who have been friends since elementary school. Max and Louie went to different colleges and incorporated their college friends into the group. Then Max started working for a travel company and incorporated those folks. So now wherever they go, including other countries, all of them have places to stay. It's pretty spectacular and special. 7y
Suet624 @tpixie Photos can be difficult because you don't actually experience the essence of the person. And I, too, love the unique and long term friendships these boys have with their friends. 7y
tpixie @Suet624 what great friendships!!! 7y
Cortg Yes, total chaos! 4 kids in 2 1/2 years. It was a lot of fun though! 7y
batsy It is very special! They sound absolutely lovely. And no doubt influenced by their wonderful mother 💕 7y

I almost bailed on this #buddyread, but I couldn't settle on another book, so I stuck it out. I was very disappointed, and I feel bad for hating this book. Even though it is fiction, it's based on experiences of the author's father. What sort of monster hates a book based on the suffering of children during war? Apparently, this girl. I'm that monster. #sorrynotsorry

shawnmooney It's too bad you didn't like it, and I guess I hope I like it better than you did! I'm in a bit of a difficult position because the author is following me on Goodreads and Twitter, so I think I'm going to shadow read it until I know that I like it, so as not to hurt his feelings. If I don't like it, there will be no social media evidence of that fact! (I don't think he's on here...). Book nerd problems! 😂 7y
DGRachel @shawnmooney I totally understand. I truly hope the rest of you love this book and that it ends up being a case of "it's not you (book), it's me". I picked up another book based on a Twitter recommendation of a favorite author and I feel like I can't post about it because I bailed on it. 7y
DGRachel @shawnmooney Obviously, based on the Goodreads reviews, I'm wrong. 😂😂 7y
Suet624 Well, you're certainly not a monster for not liking to read about children suffering. 😁. I'll see how far I get on the book. 7y

70% done. I'm forcing my way through this and just got through the chapter at the hospital. So much of this book has been dry, detached, and mind-numbing dull, and maybe that odd detachment makes the scene at the hospital so much worse. The soldiers throwing patients out of the windows, raping the nurses, and then shooting everyone that survived the fall, is all so horrific. I feel ill. 🤢 I hate this book.

dsfisher Wow, not adding to my TBR. 7y
rubyslippersreads Thanks for the warning! 7y

#litsypartyofone day 3 continues with this book (still), jellybeans, and wild cherry Pepsi. This book is killing me. If it wasn't a #buddyread with people I admire, I would bail. I can't put my finger on it, but something about the author's style doesn't work for me. I'm at 33% and b.o.r.e.d. I'm looking for excuses to do anything except read. 😭😭

shawnmooney As the self-styled Queen of Bailing, I hereby give my consent. Bail, girlfriend, bail! 😂 7y
DGRachel @shawnmooney Really? I feel so guilty, but ugh. Thank you. The book is only 238 pages, but I've been trying to read it for three days and am only at 33% (Kindle doesn't have page numbers, but that's almost 80 pages in). 7y
shawnmooney @DGRachel I'm sorry to hear that, but I would not take the slightest offense if you build: you might have noticed or might remember that I organized three concurrent buddy reads in July and bailed on all of them, leaving an embarrassing number of Litsy friends stranded! 😂 (edited) 7y

I am buddy reading this in September with @saresmoore @LeahBergen @JazzFeathers and @DGRachel - it's a debut by a Winnipeg writer based on his Hong Kongese dad's experiences under the Japanese occupation. The book isn't that easy to purchase outside Canada other than on Kindle but if anyone else wants to join us, the more the merrier!

JazzFeathers Guys, l'm having lots of problems getting the book. I can't download it from Amazon becayse it isn't available in kindle here in ltaly and getting the actual book from Canada is so expensive. I can't find it anywhere else. I'm not sure l'll be able to do the readalong 😢 7y
shawnmooney @JazzFeathers That's too bad – but no problem! @DGRachel @saresmoore @LeahBergen @Suet624 I will be ready to start reading this next weekend. How about you guys? (edited) 7y
Suet624 Yup. Good to go. 7y
DGRachel I hope you don't mind, but I went ahead and started it. I'm at the perfect break with other books and the new Le Carre comes out next week, so I want to be able to read that as soon as it hits my Kindle. 7y
shawnmooney @DGRachel Oh that's no problem at all! 😍 7y
shawnmooney @jeff Please add "The" to this title. Thanks! 7y
shawnmooney @LeahBergen @saresmoore @Suet624 Hey ladies, I finally started the novel last night. I'm only 15 or so pages in, but happy to report I'm not having the negative reaction that our friend @DGRachel had, at least not so far! I'll give it at least 50 pages before I register it as a current read on Goodreads, since the author is following me so intently there. :-) How's everybody else doing with it, earthquake evacuations & whatnot aside? ❤️ 7y
Suet624 I'm sticking with it. At 33%. Good so far. 7y
shawnmooney @Suet624 That's good news! 7y
saresmoore It is one time I'm regretting getting the digital version! Once we're assured of power to charge the device, I'll get started on it. :) 7y
shawnmooney @saresmoore You are definitely excused! 😘 @LeahBergen @Suet624 I have just posted my first quote and arbitrarily selected #WaterBeetlesBuddyRead as a tag – if anybody has a better idea, please tell me and I can always change the tag. 7y
Suet624 I have to admit that having the digital version makes posting quotes harder for me. I don't know why exactly. It's such a different medium for me that I stumble with capturing the parts that are important to me. But I shall do my best. 😁 7y
LeahBergen I just got home from a little road trip this evening and I'll be diving into this tomorrow. 👍🏻 (edited) 7y
shawnmooney @Suet624 Wow, that is fascinating! For me it is about 300% easier to post quotes from ebooks than physical or audiobooks because of the ease of copying and pasting. I'm curious as to what is harder for you... 7y
Suet624 @shawnmooney I've only read 2 or 3 books in this format and it wasn't until you mentioned that you cut and paste from ebooks that I seriously investigated how to do it. And I finally figured it out. I'm a very fast typist so for years I've typed quotes into a running word doc and then copy/paste. More than that, ebooks seem to sit on the surface of my mind, while the paper format sinks much deeper into my thoughts. Memorable quotes whiz by. 7y
shawnmooney @Suet624 I have heard other readers who say (and even heard of a study that found) that e-reading doesn't permeate as deeply as reading a paper book. I cannot relate even one iota to this. There is no such difference for me. Interesting! 7y
Suet624 Not even one iota, eh??? 😂😂 Maybe I just need to practice. Audiobooks are even harder for me to absorb. 7y
shawnmooney @Suet624 Iota....😘😘😘 I don't want to seem the slightest bit pushy but I discuss audio-, e- and physical books in a video I put on my booktube channel just yesterday, in case you were interested! https://youtu.be/AJdCvCY8Bvc 7y

I stumbled upon a tweet about this new novel by a Winnipeg writer. Then I read this review and may have to find the novel sooner rather than later! "[It] has an ending that throws everything that‘s happened before into a new light, though “light” here is not at all the right word. I‘ve reviewed hundreds of books and read, probably, thousands, and I can think of two others that have managed this high-wire act of literary derring-do." Link below.
