My favourite Morse book to date; given that it was the first one to win the British Crime Writers‘ Gold Dagger award, I was obviously not alone in this opinion! While convalescing in hospital, Morse is intrigued by a booklet about a murder 130 years previously, and finds inconsistencies that lead him to believe the wrong people were convicted, and he sets out to find the truth.
