5 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
For readers of M. C. Beaton or Susan Wittig Albert, the high-flying new Birds of a Feather mystery series from bestselling author Marty Wingate begins as a British woman gets caught up in a dangerous plot when her celebrity father disappears. With her personal life in disarray, Julia Lanchester feels she has no option but to quit her job on her fathers hit BBC Two nature show, A Bird in the Hand. Accepting a tourist management position in Smeaton-under-Lyme, a quaint village in the English countryside, Julia throws herself into her new life, delighting sightseers (and a local member of the gentry) with tales of ancient Romans and pillaging Vikings. But the past is front and center when her father, Rupert, tracks her down in a moment of desperation. Julia refuses to hear him out; his quick remarriage after her mothers death was one of the reasons Julia flew the coop. But later she gets a distressed call from her new stepmum: Rupert has gone missing. Julia decides to investigateshe owes him that much, at leastand her fathers new assistant, the infuriatingly dapper Michael Sedgwick, offers to help. Again, I needed something a little lighter than Possession, so I started this as my alternate #audiowalk book. It‘s the first in a series. So far, it‘s fine, but I haven‘t determined if I like our main character, 37 year-old Julia, yet. She quit her job as the manager of her father‘s tv show because she was mad at him for remarrying too soon after her mother‘s death, but now she‘s mad at the person who took that job. 🙄

kspenmoll I enjoyed this, but Julia‘s emotional responses to situations such as her dad‘s remarriage etc is immature esp given her age. It‘s read this, so am wondering if listening makes a difference with voices, inflection, etc. 5mo
KathyWheeler @kspenmoll If she were a teenager, I‘d get it, but she‘s a middle-aged woman, so it‘s irritating. The narrator of the audiobook is good; it‘s just Julia. 5mo

#FallTreasures #BirdOnCover

Not only are there birds on the cover of the books in the Birds of a Feather cozy mystery series but the MC, Julia Lanchester, is the daughter of a celebrity ornithologist. Julia used to work for her dad on his television shows but now manages the Tourist Information Center in the village of Smeaton-under-Lyme on the Fotheringill estate in Suffolk while solving local mysteries. There are 4 titles in this ebook series.

#12DaysofChristmas #FourCallingBirds Since originally It was "four colly birds" meaning blackbirds of some sort, I'm going with magpies which are in the same (Corvidae) bird family as crows & ravens & choosing Julia Lanchester, the MC of the Birds of a Feather cozy mystery series. In the book Julia sees 4 magpies in front of her cottage & the last time she did, her pregnant sister had a baby boy-following the Rhyme of the Magpie-"four for a boy."
