Shattered
Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton's Doomed Campaign | Jonathan Allen, Amie Parnes
16 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 11 to read
It was never supposed to be this close. And of course she was supposed to win. How Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump is the tragic story of a sure thing gone off the rails. For every Comey revelation or hindsight acknowledgment about the electorate, no explanation of defeat can begin with anything other than the core problem of Hillary's campaign--the candidate herself. Through deep access to insiders from the top to the bottom of the campaign, political writers Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes have reconstructed the key decisions and unseized opportunities, the well-intentioned misfires and the hidden thorns that turned a winnable contest into a devastating loss. Drawing on the authors' deep knowledge of Hillary from their previous book, the acclaimed biography HRC, Shattered will offer an object lesson in how Hillary herself made victory an uphill battle, how her difficulty articulating a vision irreparably hobbled her impact with voters, and how the campaign failed to internalize the lessons of populist fury from the hard-fought primary against Bernie Sanders. Moving blow-by-blow from the campaign's difficult birth through the bewildering terror of election night, Shattered tells an unforgettable story with urgent lessons both political and personal, filled with revelations that will change the way readers understand just what happened to America on November 8, 2016.

It‘s fascinating to hear just how many problems there were with Hillary Clinton‘s campaign. I still can‘t believe how she managed to lose to a reality TV president. #politics #elections #audiobook

Chelleo Tell me about it. Reading Fire and Fury now and I ask this question every five minutes. 7y
saguarosally @Chelleo That‘s in my TBR. I deliberately bought it in Washington DC. 7y

This book is a lot more nuanced, complex & interesting than you‘d suspect from the excerpting. It deepened my respect for Clinton. My complicated conclusion from it: she‘s resilient, dedicated, tough, worked as hard as humanly possible, was dealt a terrible unfair hand (Russia, sexism, hacking), made grave strategic errors and ultimately was just the wrong candidate for this populist moment. The headwinds of history were against her.

Caroline2 Oh yeah, I'm looking forward to reading this! 👍🏻 7y

I was reading this book on the 2016 Clinton campaign with total objective detachment until I got to the day of the Election and suddenly started to tear up. This line about the glass ceiling ... 😢

I am reading this book because it was recommended by an ardent Sanders supporter on a liberal blog. It is interesting, but I'm not convinced yet that the Clinton campaign is nearly as dysfunctional as the Trump administration. #audiobook #politics #2016election

Shattered is exactly how I feel after reading this! An incredibly well researched and written exploration of what went wrong in HRC's bid for the White House.

This book is so utterly depressing.

BookishMarginalia One question: does it account for Russian interference in the election, or does it lay all the blame on HRC? 7y
Skyler @BookishMarginalia It gets into the Russians, the email server scandal, HRC's inability to connect with white working class voters, Bernie, and a lot of attention is paid to the campaign apparatus and its unwillingness to see just how at risk certain key blue wall states were. 7y
awonderinglife I agree - I felt completely shattered after reading it! 7y

One of the (rare, few) joys of freelancing is when multiple paydays converge on your (empty) bank account. Today, I had a rare triple payday...and happened to be near Barnes and Noble! 😊

I LOVE campaign books. I find behind scenes decision making of events we've all "observed" fascinating. I'm bothered by process of book though. Everyone is anonymous & 2 active reporters saved their best & most informative stuff from readers in order to profit off them for a book. That said it's a look into a true wtf result that shocked everyone. If you watch the Sunday shows or The Circus this book will be catnip for you.

EMILY'S LIST isn't just about abortion rights. They are about getting liberal women elected to office. I would think the authors would know this.
