A quietly enchanting novel with writing that is simultaneously understated & sublime. It's a brief glimpse into the diverse lives of various characters living in a Parisian apartment block. Tackles big issues - loss & grief, isolation of early motherhood/PND/PNP, rise of far right in France, radicalization but it's never heavy or preachy. The characters are so real, so genuine that it feels like a privilege to witness the events herein.

Having a second try at starting this one tonight. Tried last night but was far too (book) hungover from The Winners that I stared at the first page for about 20 minutes without actually reading a single word!

On balance, I liked this book. The stories of the various occupants of an apartment building in Paris are well-told, and I like Cooper‘s style of writing; the political sub-plot, while an important subject to deal with, seemed a little out of kilter with the rest of the story, and not given the full attention it deserves.

HELP. I bought 12 books while in Paris. I'm going to have to leave behind all of my clothing to get these books home.

TrishB Worth it 😁 Did you go to Shakespeare and Co? 6y
TheNerdyProfessor Yesterday ... It was magnificent. And while I was there they had a program where you can sign up to get 12 books shipped to you throughout the year ... Totally got suckered in 🙈 6y

Moray_Reads @saresmoore It made my day! But this is why I don't post my negative reviews on Twitter, it would be like slating a book to an author's face, if feel too bad 😕 8y

Young Englishman Edward seeks refuge in Paris following a family tragedy. In a shared building, in a rundown corner of the fabled city we catch a glimpse beneath the glittering facade. There are some hefty themes, grief, extremism, the surge of right-wing xenophobia but Cooper has an admirable lightness of touch that gives each its deserved weight but creates a novel that is ultimately a breath of fresh air. A lovely debut (and a beautiful cover)
