so-soNYRB says this is a classic of gay literature, but it breaks the fourth wall a bit as the author wrote it probably autobiographically and never finished it or published it. This translated edition has a note he made inserted in the text and a lot of informational about the poet and how it was published at all, but it really is a rather fragmented reading experience.
