Past Mortems
Past Mortems | Carla Valentine
A day in the life of Carla Valentine - curator, pathology technician and 'death professional' - is not your average day. She spent ten years training and working as an Anatomical Pathology Technologist: where the mortuary slab was her desk, and that day's corpses her task list. Past Mortems tells Carla's stories of those years, as well as investigating the body alongside our attitudes towards death - shedding light on what the living can learn from dead and the toll the work can take on the living souls who carry it out. Fascinating and insightful, Past Mortems reveals the truth about what happens when the mortuary doors swing shut or the lid of the coffin closes . . .

Carla Valentine is an ATP (anatomical pathology technician), she assists a pathologist in autopsy to aid in a diagnosis of cause of death. In this book, she explores her career, the reasons why certain things are done and out Western squeamishness towards death. An interesting read. #NFN2020 #Book

Clwojick This sounds right to my alley! I‘m going to suggest it to my library. 4y

Beginning ‘Past Mortems‘ this morning for #NFN2020 I‘m a huge fan of Caitlin Doughty and Mary Roach, so hoping for a similar feel from this English book. #DeathPositive

Started this book finally the other day and nearly finished already. Love it so much already and I‘m kind of disappointed that it‘s nearly over already.

1. This is me enjoying scampi & chips on the beach on the bank holiday Monday 🍤🍟
2. ⤴ Tagged book... its a bit different, but the humour makes a morbid subject easier to deal with 😊
3. Today it's been drizzly rain and a bit chilly 🌧 (but I tend to feel the cold)
4. Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen 📚
5. Not a holiday here in the UK, but I'm picking up my grandad's old art desk and relaxing 🎨

This memoir of an anatomical pathology technologist (a mortician to you and me) is a grisly but really fascinating read: thoughtful on our relationship with death and informative about the reality of what happens to our bodies.

this book lifts the lid on daily life in the mortuary with detailed insights from history, & science. Very descriptive, as a result I feel I could dissect some shit up after reading this. Not for the fainthearted. interesting, Fascinating & insightful. if you are interested in what happens when we die then pick this one up. As this reveals the truth about what happens before the lid of the coffin slams shut 4/5 #pastmortems #nonfiction #review

[DELETED] 3803335244 My husband might love this! While he was in college for forensic science, I saw way too many morbid books cross his path! Lol 😂 7y

Bit of a change here. Not my usual thing at all although the death count is way, way higher. Fascinating if you're a bit on the morbidly inquisitive side like me. 😜

Started it on the plane this morning because it's always good to be thinking about dying when you're in a tin tube at 30,000 feet.

Ms_T I'm so glad you arrived safely! 😬 7y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A very well written and informative book on what life is like as an APT. There is no embellishment to make the book seem glamorous, just the truth.

Being a veterinary post mortem technician, I bought this a few weeks ago to see if I could find any comparisons with my job. I still haven't got round to reading it, but with a holiday in Norway next week, I have no excuse not to start it 😁 #PastMortems #CarlaValentine #Nonfiction

Amazing look behind the mortuary doors. Carla displays beautifully the sheer love and compassion behind those who work in the death industry. Highly recommended but not for the faint of heart and easily upset. Theres nothing too graphic but if you are sensitive to child loss or death in general these topics are covered.
