Human Traces
Human Traces | Sebastian Faulks
4 posts | 14 read | 13 to read
As young boys both Jacques Rebire and Thomas Midwinter become fascinated with trying to understand the human mind. As psychiatrists, their quest takes them from the squalor of the Victorian lunatic asylum to the crowded lecture halls of the renowned Professor Charcot in Paris; from the heights of the Sierra Madre in California to the plains of unexplored Africa. As the concerns of the old century fade and the First World War divides Europe, the two men's volatile relationship develops and changes, but is always tempered by one exceptional woman; Thomas's sister Sonia. Moving and challenging in equal measure, Human Traces explores the question of what kind of beings men and women really are.

Pickpick

I‘ve read this book twice now , it‘s long and detailed so I think I took new things from the second reading . Beautifully written - interesting story line - and follows the characters throughout their lives - it‘s well worth a read or even two .

Cathythoughts Lovely review Emma ❤️ 6mo
emmasm08 @Cathythoughts - I‘m sure it‘s one you‘d like Cathy if you haven‘t already read it 😘xx 6mo

The main thread of this story is the early exploration of mental illnesses and the development of psychology as medical science. Great premise, but very chaotic execution … although very well researched.

Crazeedi Too bad because this is an interesting topic 3y
Simona Very interesting, but the author was trying too hard to put his research into the story, but I will give him another chance with the sequel, just because the topic is interesting @Crazeedi (edited) 3y

#wanderingjune #mountains

Two young men, one English and one French, each from very different walks of life, are drawn to the developing science of psychiatry in nineteenth century Europe. Their paths eventually cross and they set up an asylum in the #mountains of Austria. This novel was fantastically detailed with rich characters, but for me it kind of went off the boil towards the end. Still very good - Faulks is one of my faves 😍

Cathythoughts I have Human Traces on my kindle , Paula ! I must push it up the TBR 👍🏻♥️😘 5y
Cinfhen I know there is lots of #LitsyLove for Faulks but I haven‘t connected well with him (yet) 🤓 (edited) 5y
Centique @Cinfhen my favourite is Charlotte Gray. Have you tried that? Heart breaking though so you have to be in a good place to tackle it! 5y

These two friends are both doctors who are 19th century pioneers of mental health treatments for people who aren't coping with reality. They establish a sanctuary for long term treatments.
I have loved every Sebastian Faulks novel I have read including this one.
