9 posts | 11 read | 15 to read
A NEW CRIME THRILLER WITH A COMPELLING DETECTIVE WHO WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO AVENGE HER DAUGHTER THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's got tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out. HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname "Holy Joe" belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family. THEIR ADVERSARY is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement. THE TOWN is being terrorised by gangs of violent thugs, all wearing identical hideous masks. Then a talented young female student goes missing on the marsh and Nikki and Joseph find themselves joining forces with a master criminal in their efforts to save her. They need to look behind the masks, but when they do, they find something more sinister and deadly than they ever expected . . . THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you've ever seen. DISCOVER YOUR NEXT FAVOURITE MYSTERY SERIES NOW Perfect for fans of Rachel Abbott, Robert Bryndza Mel Sherratt, Angela Marsons or Ruth Rendell CRIME ON THE FENS is the first novel in a gripping new crime fiction series. The next book SHADOW OVER THE FENS will be released very soon. I had high hopes for this series since I‘ve heard so much good about it, but I found the first book to be only good, but not great. Did not (yet) fully warm up to the characters or the story, but I think I‘ll grow into liking this series a lot. 3,5

EadieB Will check it out! 2y
Andrew65 Think it does improve but not my favourite of series. 2y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Happy to hear it gets better. It lacks that thing that draws me in right from the beginning and keeps me hooked until the end. We‘ve read many of these kind of great series, so we know what we like. 2y

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Exactly, I think I dropped off this series, not a decision I made but never quite pulled to them. 2y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I‘m 50/50 with this one. Should I give it a second chance? 🤔 Too many great books out there. Sad, because she‘s supposed to be a great author. Maybe another series? 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads She‘s got plenty of them. I always feel it‘s worth giving two books in a series a go. 2y

Looking at lots off Q8.99 books and then checking if someone I know has read them. Turns out @Andrew65 is reading about half of them right now, according to Goodreads ?? I guess he‘s not updating too frequently. Now I don‘t know if I should buy all these books or not. Andrew, you need to rate the books so that I know if I should checked them out or not! ?

Andrew65 Yes I do need to update Goodreads. 🤷 I‘ve read this one and gave it 4 stars. Read a few from the Nikki Galena and Matt Ballard series. Possibly prefer the Nikki Galena series more bit they are all good reads. Most probably in the 4 - 4 1/2 star range. Do want to continue with her books. 3y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Cool, thanks! I think it was 5 for 99p, so sounds like an excellent deal! There were others as well. The body in the dales was one I was looking at. 3y
Andrew65 I‘ve enjoyed The Body in the Dales series, only got one more to read in that one. 5 for 99p is a bargain! 3y

One side of my family came from the Fens, I have visited there. One thing that I never saw; Gangs of wandering juvenile delinquents terrorising town and country. That being said I kind of enjoyed this rather clichéd book; a DCI on her last warning, haunted by past cases is partnered with a by the book detective with his own skeletons in the closet. Together they grow and heal as they investigate a missing girl and a spate of juvenile crime .

Book one in the DI Nikki Galena series and it hooked me with a wallop. I listened to the Audible version and the narrator helped with her brilliant portrayal of the characters. I love detective mysteries and this promises to be a terrific series.

Read with a thick lilt and including a few references I was unsure of, (the cabra? Cabra? since I listened to it I didn't know if it was a proper noun place or an improper noun place) I enjoyed this mystery (not loved, but liked). Perhaps not the most exciting or surprising that I've ever read, but entertaining nonetheless, more in the characterizations than anything else.

LeeRHarry Ooh set in Lincolnshire - my home county - should check this out 😊 7y

Got this from Hoopla to listen to while in my studio this afternoon and really like it- first in a series- good narrator and compelling procedural so far! Anyone else read this series?

Mdargusch I really liked this book too! 7y

This was a fast paced thriller that reminded me of books by Tana French. I loved the narration on this book and all the different English accents. I recommend the audio version for entertainment while driving.

cathysaid Sounds like fun/intriguing brain candy! Stacked! 🍬🍭 8y
Mdargusch @cathysaid I'm starting the second in the series today since I liked the first book so much! 8y
