The Artist who Painted a Blue Horse
The Artist who Painted a Blue Horse | Eric Carle
5 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
Rather than use the same old colors, a child paints animals and objects in a variety of different hues. Includes information about the German painter Franz Marc, who created unconventional animal paintings in the early 1900s, and how his art, banned by the Nazi regime, inspired young Eric Carle.

Absolutely in love with the vibrant menagerie in The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse. I aspire to the chill that is "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly," Said the Sloth. I like the context provided for Franz Marc (paintings) and by Jane Goodall (?) for sloths. Will definitely be looking up more Eric Carle picture books.

#LilithJuly Day 13: Perhaps Franz Marc considers his blue horse #MyFavoriteMistake but then again the colours may be deliberate, as it initiated the Der Blau Reiter movement. This board book, however, did not go into much detail about the art movement. It simply celebrates how familiar animals can be rendered in different (often unexpected) colours. It is a subtle reminder of the beauty of dancing shades. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-iY2

The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse is written and illustrated by Eric Carle. This Fantasy (F) picture book was an Illustrator of the Year Finalist. This book is about an artist who uses his imagination to paint animals in different prints and colors. This short story would be great for storytelling (S). The resource I chose is a site that summarizes the book and lists where you can find lesson plans and activities for the book! ⬇️

AmeliaS21 http://www.bethstilborn.com/the-artist-who-painted-a-blue-horse-perfect-picture-... UDL 1.2 offer alternatives for auditory information and UDL 1.3 offer alternatives for visual information are important if storytelling is the teaching strategy used to present this book. ESOL strategy 11 place language in meaningful context and ESOL strategy 13 use preview/review activities would be helpful for this book. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
JordanL This is a book I'm pretty interested in. It's awesome seeing connections with the class with Eric Carle. I read into the website and I feel this book could also be great for an art lesson as it talks about "celebration of a child's joy in art. . . .". Thank you for an awesome resource. 7y
AmeliaS21 @JordanL I‘m glad you enjoyed the resource!! 7y
KaitlynN I love this book! It would be really interesting to do an Eric Carle author study and incorporate art from several of his books. I think his artwork is fantastic, and I think it is accessible to children. It‘s not like looking at art in other picture books where it feels like you could never make anything that looks even close to that! 7y

This is one of my favorite read-aloud books for the library storytime I do. It has bold, bright, interesting pictures and simple text that is perfect for my 0-3 age group. And then, I can add more info about Eric Carle‘s childhood and the artist Franz Marc to engage older kids and adults. Even my littlest ones get that it‘s silly not to be able to color a horse whatever color you want, and we finish off with an art project coloring rainbow horses.

My 4 year old's favorite thing in the whole world right now is drawing. When he woke up this morning, he came out of his room with this book, grabbed his sketch pad, and started drawing his own blue horse. He's my little artist! 💙#raisingreaders
