I would use this in an upper elementary grade classroom. This would be a perfect book to introduce the importance of children's books and why we have them today.

A great story of how children's came to be. Does a great job of explaining who John Newberry was and why children's books are so important. Children in school will love learning about John Newberry!

#NFNov Book 17 finished. Bingo prompts: Book about Books
A cute picture book about John Newbery who wrote the first children's books. The Newbery Medal & Honor awards were named after him.
#TIL John Newbery was British, not American. Little goody-two-shoes was not just a saying, it was one of the books that he wrote.

#RedRoseSeptember Day 4: With the birth of children‘s literature, clearly #EverybodysHappyNowadays. From Fats‘ review: “Unlike mums and dads in those days who thought that books would turn their children into wild beasts, John believed that children should have access to books.” Full review of this picturebook biography here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-hpD

We really were curious about how the Caldecott Medal got its name and this book does a pretty good job introducing readers to the man who played a key role in creating the genre of children's literature. It's hard to imagine a time when books for young readers didn't exist because they thought it was a bad idea.
PS we are giving away a copy over on Instagram. Same username.
