I confess; my favourite covers are the Geoff Taylor Corgi ones, which were the covers on the books I first read:

Seemingly irrelevant details that really contribute to the ambiance without detracting from the narrative

humouress I've finished reading this. I really enjoyed re-reading it; it's so much fun. 3y
humouress I've always found the Drasnian spy language, using flickers of fingers, a fascinating concept. 👌 3y

I love the banter.

Very readable.
The style of writing can come across as a bit simplistic at times but it‘s like comfort food; it gets the job done decently well. The strength of the narrative is in the background details and little throw away incidents that create the ambiance.

humouress I‘m re-reading this after decades but it was one of my first fantasy series and I remember the basics of the story. Things that should be ominous, unfortunately, aren‘t anymore 😕 3y
humouress They‘re tracking a stolen item that had assured the western kingdoms‘ safety to prevent it crossing the border and visiting rulers as they go, to warn them of war. I like that the crew is multinational. But they all seem to have romantic problems 🤗 I‘m still enjoying the interactions & friendships 3y
humouress There's quite a bit of violence & gore, which I'd forgotten. Somehow, though, it's not upsetting. I suppose it's not gratuitous or dwelt on (a bit like watching manga or an 80s TV show) though we do witness a few deaths.
I do remember noticing, when I read it the first time at height of the Cold War, that the countries in the west were the 'good guys' (stereotype?) - but, hey, someone's got to be.

🏥 Day 4. Dawn. Starting book #3 of my stay. I made it my mission from my arrival in a permanent room to be a pleasant patient and keep the staff laughing, because they work so hard. But around 5:30 this morning was the dark night of my soul. I miss my family and my house but I wept for missing my dog. #getmeout #mypatienceandmygoodhumouraregone

Bookwormjillk Oh gosh, I feel for you. That sounds like a hard morning but I‘m glad you have books. 4y

February #BookSpin done! And another one down for #seriesread2021 @TheAromaofBooks @TheSpineView

I liked this one less than the first, but that might be only due to disliking the narration more. I'll do the rest of the series in print and see. I do still get the feeling that I'd have loved this series if I'd read it when I was younger.

TheSpineView I read this series when it first came out and loved it! 4y
xicanti I loved these soooooo much when I was fourteen, but they didn‘t have the same wow factor when I reread them in my mid twenties. 4y
llwheeler @xicanti yeah so far I haven't shaken that sense of remove... Teen or even preteen me would have really liked this, rather than thirties me is really liking it. 4y

Since I‘ve been in a bit of a reading slump thanks to current events, I decided to go back and revisit and old fave. I was overdue for a reread. And it worked! I finished book 1 yesterday and started this one last night.

I love this series just as much as the first time I read it in 1988. ❤️ I can always escape into this series.

One book down and a smidge over 2 hours for #24b4Monday 😀

TracyReadsBooks One of my all time favorite fantasy series! 5y
Andrew65 A great start, and I need to read some of his books. 5y

I opted for the first line of chapter one instead of the first line of the prologue because I liked this one better. 😀

A solid continuation od The Belgariad. I enjoyed reading it as it made me feel cozy and remember playing Dungeons and Dragons when I was a kid. The whole book is mostly about walking, hiking, strolling and transporting of the characters from one place to another but still the read is enjoyable. I would welcome a deeper character development which is the one thing that always makes or breaks the book for me.

Ordered four great reads from Book Chor - an amazing website that sells second-hand books! Got a sweet little note and bookmarks as well, and love the fact that these pages have been thumbed through and loved before. Looking forward to a happy week!

Book 2 in the series and I'm still really enjoying it. Love watching Garion grow before me and I don't know what it is but I love Silk too. A great read. Onto book 3.

Mandorallen is the Knight Protector of the prophecy in David Eddings‘s The Belgariad series. He is first introduced in the tagged book (but his image was on The Guardians of the West‘s book 1 in the subsequent series, The Mallorean)and he becomes Princess (and later Queen) Ce‘Nedra‘s champion.

Continuing my re-read. Despite the relative dearth of female characters, the dialogue is snappy and I like how the group mostly stays together instead of splitting up for books and books like Game of Thrones or the Wheel of Time. Events on the cover occupy the last twenty pages.
