#lethal #quotsyapril18 @TK-421 I had the opposite experience from @GatheringBooks . I knew Atwood as a novelist first, and discovered her poetry through my daughter. We literally had this conversation: Her - I didn‘t know she wrote novels! Me - I didn‘t know she wrote poetry!

GatheringBooks the first two poems i remember reading were: (1) variations on the word love and (2) variations on the word sleep. :) her novels are also very poetic and lyrical. :) 7y
TK-421 It's awesome that you & your daughter can enhance each other's appreciation for a terrific writer! 7y

#QuotsyApril18 Day 27: Before I knew Margaret Atwood as a novelist, I read her poetry first, this was how I discovered her unsettling writing that unapologetically portrays womanity in all its brutal, #lethal, subjugated, silenced form. She is unparalleled.

Pickpick

My sweetheart started collecting poetry in her youth, and I found this in her bookcase. 1968 Oxford U Press, letter press on paper so thick it feels like a wedding invitation. The poetry is divinely melancholic; "disastrous ice," "abstract hunger," and landladies who own your freedom. Atwood had already won a GG (for Circle Game) by the time this was published. She's an extraordinary writer.

BekahB I read Circle Game years ago and really loved it. I'll have to see if I can find this one at the library. 8y
Lindy @BekahB I have not yet read Circle Game. It's on that towering TBR. 📚 8y

defend themselves with fences
in vain:
everything
is getting in.

In that long night
the animals crept out
through the burrows of my blind eyes;
they went away to a different part of the forest,
leaving their masks behind.
