Feynman | Jim Ottaviani, Leland Myrick

Richard Feynman: physicist . . . Nobel winner . . . bestselling author . . . safe-cracker. In this substantial graphic novel biography, First Second presents the larger-than-life exploits of Nobel-winning quantum physicist, adventurer, musician, world-class raconteur, and one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century: Richard Feynman. Written by nonfiction comics mainstay Jim Ottaviani and brilliantly illustrated by First Second author Leland Myrick, Feynman tells the story of the great man's life from his childhood in Long Island to his work on the Manhattan Project and the Challenger disaster. Ottaviani tackles the bad with the good, leaving the reader delighted by Feynman's exuberant life and staggered at the loss humanity suffered with his death. Anyone who ever wanted to know more about Richard P. Feynman, quantum electrodynamics, the fine art of the bongo drums, the outrageously obscure nation of Tuva, or the development and popularization of the field of physics in the United States need look no further than this rich and joyful work. One of School Library Journal's Best Adult Books 4 Teens titles of 2011 One of Horn Book's Best Nonfiction Books of 2011

I had to bail on that insipid mess, ‘One Good Deed‘ and I‘ve picked this backlist up instead: A biography of Richard O. Feynman done in the GN format by Jim Ottaviani with artwork by Leland Myrick.

The quote above appears on the front cover and is “from Lucille Feynman, his mother, after *Omni* magazine named Richard Feynman the world‘s smartest man...” 😂

Peddler410 I have this one on my shelves at one of my schools. 6y

Pickpick

This was a fun biography; my favorite part was when his lectures were (finally) illustrated. In my opinion it too too long to get to the science. I don‘t think Feynman‘s flirtations/womanizing age well, but the portrait of his first wife was lovely, and he seemed to hold scientists in high regard without consideration of gender. The illustrations were a bit bland and hard to follow at times; many people weren‘t distinctive!

UrsulaMonarch Thanks to @LitsyGetsGraphic for selecting this one! 6y

Recommended by my son. QED is still incomprehensible & I bristle at the hints of womanizing, but I can‘t help but enjoy the First Second books.

One of the main purposes of this book was to illustrate quantum physics theory in pictures. Did you understand it? Was it easy to understand?

LukkiAnn I did not understand the theory completely. I am a huge fan of metaphysics and it clicks a lot with it. It seems like every possibility can happen even if you just thinking about how electron is working in different directions. 7y
cobwebmoth I understood parts of it, but some of it was way over my head. I think I might check out 7y
LitsyGetsGraphic @cobwebmoth I checked it out but did not start reading yet. I found out Feynman‘s physics lectures very interesting as well. I do not think I will read them all (it‘s a huge book) but it was very easy to understand physics reading them. 7y

I did not know that Feynman was a father of nano technologies before reading this book. Did you have any discoveries for yourself? Do you understand physics? Do you like this science?

Eyelit What I discovered is that I knew a bit about Feynman‘s personal life prior to reading this. Back in the 90‘s I saw this Patricia Arquette/Matthew Broderick movie and when I read the story about the pencils in this book it struck me as familiar... so I looked up the movie (infinity, I believe) and confirmed that it‘s about Richard and Arline 😃 7y
Eyelit Also - I don‘t understand physics, but I want to so badly 7y
cobwebmoth I didn't know anything about Feynman before reading this. I've never dug deep into this kind of science, but I find it interesting. 7y

Richard and Joan had a wonderful brother-sister relationship. He taught her science and she brought him back to physics when he had a crisis. Later in the book we found out that Feynman gave her a word never interfered in her job. But Wouldn‘t it be a great collaboration for science if they combine their minds? Does it sound like a lost possibility for new discoveries? Lets speculate 🗣

cobwebmoth I thought it was nice that they never tried to steal the other's spotlight, but you would think that they would make a great team, too. 7y
Eyelit I agree with @cobwebmoth 7y

Why does Feynman have trouble returning to civilization? Do you think he wanted to return?

LukkiAnn He was still grieving from his wife lost and could not see himself as a teacher yet. The difference being in Manhattan project and being just a teacher seems really confusing 7y
cobwebmoth @LukkiAnn I agree. He was used to being away from most society, and even though it doesn't say so, I think he was depressed at this point. 7y
Eyelit I think it has to be hard to a) be coming from a place of grief, and b) coming from a place of isolation and lack of ‘regular‘ civilization. The culture shock, so to speak, has got to be staggering 7y

Feynman‘s safecrackering exploits turn on luck, and this is the one the most famous stories about him, where his reputation officially blossoms. How do you think this affected his later life and the legends that build up around him? Do you think he actively sought out situations like that which would add to his reputation?

cobwebmoth I think he definitely enjoyed having that reputation. 7y
LukkiAnn @cobwebmoth I agree, I think he was seeking fame. I watched his physics lectures and it is obvious from a screen that his was enjoying be on public and making jokes 7y

Good morning ☀️ let‘s start our discussion with a traditional question did you like the book? What do you think about art? How did you like panels and colors?

LukkiAnn I have a very mixed feelings about the book. The art was sometimes confusing I couldn‘t distinguish characters and all Feynman‘s women look the same. I would say that the only reason to keep me reading was Feynman‘s character. I checked out his “Surely, you are joking Mr. Feynman” and found out that that graphic novel was based on this book. 7y
cobwebmoth It was okay. I didn't love it, but I didn't dislike it either. I wasn't a huge fan of the art. 7y
Eyelit I‘m halfway through and find myself ambivalent. I don‘t like the art (at all) and I find some of the timelines confusing or too brief. Also, I‘m feeling this is very surface, and I‘d like some stories to delve a bit deeper. 7y

Repost for @LitsyGetsGraphic :
Reason #8 why should you read Feynman.
There is a short course about quantum physics in the book. It was a big goal for the scientist to explain quantum physics in such way that it will be understandable even for a child.
Discussion starts on 6/2.
If you could not find a copy in your library there are some options: Barnes and Nobles has copies starting at $5; Amazon has copies for $3; Kindle edition is $11.99

LitsyGetsGraphic @Dogearedcopy hey Tanya! Did you get a chance to read the book? We are discussing it right now 7y
Dogearedcopy @LitsyGetsGraphic Unfortunately no, I had an insane schedule while I was in NYC; and then on 6/02 I was in air travel hell (My flight got canceled and I ended up having to scramble to get back home.) It‘s unfortunate because I really like the author‘s other gns; I got to meet the author a couple of years ago; *and* I‘m fascinated w/quantum theory! 7y
LitsyGetsGraphic @Dogearedcopy no problem, you still can comment when you will read it)) our next choice is available on Hoopla, hope it make more convenient ;) stay turned ❤️ 7y

The reason #7️⃣ to read Feynman graphic novel by Jim Ottaviani.
Once gifted always gifted!!!
This is art by Richard Feynman he started drawing at the age of 44😱😱😱. He exchanged lessons with his friend in art and science. It is not sure that his friend understood science clearly by Feynman went on draw until the end of his life.

Why you should read Feynman?
Reason #6️⃣
This is Joan Feynman, Richard‘s sister. She is an astrophysicist, who made an important contribution to the study of solar wind, Sun-Earth relations and physics as well. She had to fight with her family for right to pursuing science (her mother was strictly against it and only Richard understood her). Mr. Feynman made a pact with his sister that he would never interfere in her work.

Reason #5️⃣ to read Feynman with us:
Mr. Feynman was a practical joker. He cracked every safe in the Manhattan project‘s office what was mentioned in a real memo as a possible security breach 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻 but he did it just for fun

Mehso-so

I am glad that I read this book and found out a lot of curious and wonderful things about this scientist. Feynman was full of talents: incredible teacher, artist, and scientist who had told jokes. Unfortunately, I cannot give this biography more than 3 stars. Many characters are indistinguishable (same colors, same face features), many blanks (to fill them you should check out Surely You Are Joking), QED theory is not clear even in graphics(((
