The Reinvention of Love
The Reinvention of Love | Helen Humphreys
7 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
When Charles Sainte-Beuve, a French journalist, met Victor Hugo, an ambitious young writer, he was swept into a world of grand emotions, a world where words can become swords. But Charles' attraction moves on from Victor, to his wife Adle. Soon the two lovers are on the edge of a great scandale and a wounded Victor must exact his price for betrayal.Set during the tumultuous reign of Napoleon III, this mesmerising novel draws a rich portrait of old Paris, where duels were fought and cholera-ridden bodies float in the Seine. An atmospheric story of delicacy and emotion, The Reinvention of Love brings together the voices of two women destroyed by Victor Hugo's ferocious ambition, and the unique, acerbic and heart-breaking voice of Charles Sainte-Beuve, first Hugo's friend and then his unlikely competitor in love.

Beautiful Saturday afternoon = #bookhaul7 and a cup of tea at The Art Warehouse (where my son works). Two graphic novels for my classroom and two books for me from my local second hand bookstore.

#agameoffavorites (or favourites 😉)

This is Helen Humphreys. Her historical fiction is absolutely beautiful, often finding a story to treasure within a well-covered time (see: any of her WWII stories). But this one, about an unconventional love affair between Adele Hugo and Charles Saint-Beuve, captured my mind and heart.

TheKidUpstairs Humphreys' most re-read books are As I Lay Dying, and Frankenstein because: "They are both superb books in their own right, and also excellent stories about grief and grieving." Humphreys visited one of my classes in Uni, and she raved to me about Mary Lawson's Crow Lake. Bad reader that I am, I still haven't read it, but it has an eternal spot on my TBR. Someday I WILL grab a copy and read it! 6y

This book was such a lovely re-read! Helen Humphreys has such an amazing ability to weave historical fiction out of her own thorough research. 📚😍
