The Blood Card
The Blood Card: Stephens and Mephisto Mystery 3 | Elly Griffiths
17 posts | 19 read | 6 to read
On the eve of the Queen's coronation, DI Stephens and Max Mephisto uncover an anarchist plot and a ticking bomb at the same time as solving the murder of a man close to them - from the author of the bestselling Dr Ruth Galloway mysteries. 'Mixes cosiness and sharpness in a way that recalls the best of Agatha Christie' Sunday Express (on Smoke and Mirrors) Elizabeth II's coronation is looming, but the murder of their wartime commander, Colonel Cartwright, spoils the happy mood for DI Edgar Stephens and magician Max Mephisto. A playbill featuring another deceased comrade is found in Colonel Cartwright's possession, and a playing card, the ace of hearts: the blood card. The wartime connection and the suggestion of magic are for Stephens and Mephisto to be summoned to the case. Edgar's ongoing investigation into the death of Brighton fortune-teller Madame Zabini is put on hold. Max is busy rehearsing for a spectacular Coronation Day variety show - and his television debut - so it's Edgar who is sent to New York, a land of plenty worlds away from still-rationed England. He's on the trail of a small-town mesmerist who may provide the key, but someone silences him first. It's Edgar's colleague, DS Emma Holmes, who finds the clue, buried in the files of the Zabini case, that leads them to an anarchist group intent on providing an explosive finale to Coronation Day. Now it's up to Edgar, Max and Emma to foil the plot, and find out who it is who's been dealing the cards . . .

In 1953 a former intelligence officer is found dead, stabbed, with an Ace of Hearts pinned to his chest. Is there an anarchist plot to bomb the new Queen's coronation?

Enjoyably twisty and amusing enough characters to bring a smile to the reader's lips. And what a different world it was at the time of the last coronation. I hadn't realised the very thinly-disguised “The Good Old Days“ went that far back.

This is the 3rd book in the series and the characters continue to improve. DI Stephen's returns along with Max and his daughter. This time they are out to find a killer and stop a bombing on Queen Elizabeth's coronation day. The story is full of misdirection and the plot is solid. A surprise ending and I am already looking forward to book 4. 4⭐️ #Scarathlon2022 @StayCurious #TeamMonsterMash

Currently listening to The Blood Card by Elly Griffiths. So what do you do when you listen to an audio book?

I was doing audio laundry and cleaning earlier. Now I am down loading pictures from this past weekend, taken by a professional, and posting on social media. Maybe I will work on a puzzle next.

Hope you enjoy this pictures.

This is another series by Elly Griffiths, set in Brighton at the beginning of the 1950s. The investigating duo is DI Stephens and magician Max Mephisto. This is the third in the series and the first I have read. Probably best to start at the beginning mainly for the progression of each character. I will be getting the first book now from the library tomorrow.

I got these two from the library yesterday, I am in the mood of some crime stories. I started the tagged book already and enjoying it. It's the third in this series and I haven't read any of them. Luckily they are all in the library!

Speaking of series...this is the third book in the Magic Men series that I started reading thanks to the ill fated #whodunitymail reading exchange.

There‘s a little too much about the main character‘s love life, and the solution wrapped up too quickly, but I enjoyed the story. It takes place during Queen Elizabeth‘s coronation, and I understand today is her birthday.

Clever and interesting. Maybe not quite as good as the previous one, but still very good.

I‘m not sure why I don‘t love this series as much as the Ruth Galloway books, but it is still enjoyable. This particular one in the series was a little better than the first one but I didn‘t enjoy it as much as the second one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

wanderinglynn What a cutie! ❤️🐱 6y
rretzler 😻I agree. I don‘t like the series quite as much as Ruth, but still enjoy it. Possibly because I find more to identify with in Ruth than I do with Edgar or Max? 6y
bookwrm526 @rretzler Very possibly! It may also be the difference between a historical setting and a modern one 6y

Petit fours (not very petit, though, are they) and a murder mystery this evening. I really enjoy this series by Elly Griffiths, about magicians and variety shows in post-WWII Britain. 🎩

Andrew65 I've just started listening to book 1 of this series. I love her Ruth Galloway series. 7y

Third in the Max Mephisto mystery series, Blood Card reunites Max and Edgar in an entertaining mystery involving gypsies, con men, and anarchists. As is typical for Griffiths‘ stories, there are dozens of loose ends, red herrings, and clever clues flying through this story. Also typical for Griffiths, all those tasty little bits of information are gathered together and resolved handily by the end. Full review at http://itsallaboutthebook.org

bookwrm526 I've only read the first one of these, I need to remember to pick up the others! I love her Ruth Galloway books 7y

I love Elly Griffiths. This is the third in her Magic Men series and it's just as entertaining as the first two. Her murder mysteries are fun, twisty, and often humorous. This one isn't out in the US yet, but I couldn't wait for it, so ordered it through Book Depository online.

I really enjoyed the history part of this book. I also like the way the author is developing more of the side characters. I did find some parts of the book a little slow going but overall it was a good read. Will define be continuing with this series although I am not as enthralled as I am with the Ruth Galloway series.

Ms.Story I love her Ruth Galloway novels and have been debating about giving this series a try. It's so hard for me to adjust my expectations since I really just want more Ruth & Nelson! 8y
samharnold They are good and have some good characters in them. I live near Brighton , where they are set, so has an extra something for me. The first is the zig zag girl and I would suggest reading them in order. 8y
