Beasts of Olympus is a series of 144-page illustrated chapter books set in a magical Ancient Greece where strange things still walk the Earth. Beast Keeper tells the story of Pandemonius (a.k.a. "Demon," the half-god son of Pan) who, on his tenth birthday, is called upon to look after all the mythical creatures that belong to the stables of Olympus.

Did I buy this middle grade book because I discovered the artist currently doing the art for Skottie Young‘s I Hate Fairyland ALSO did the illustrations for this book?!? Oh yes I did! Add in the fact the main character is named Pandemonius and there was no way I could resist. (Not that I tried…) Plus, I‘m always on the lookout for middle grade fiction to recommend. Hopefully this series starter is a winner!

GondorGirl Okay, this looks adorable! 14mo

Me and my kids thought it was okay. Good but not enough to keep going with the Beasts of Olympus series. We all liked the monsters that were introduced every few chapters. The main character (a preteen half-god) had a good balance between hardworking and insecure. This illustrated chapter book may be a good bridge for kids interested in Greek Mythology but not be ready for the Percy Jackson series. (Next read-aloud? ANOTHER Creepella book.)

I just realized I didn't post this yet. I may be taking the title of the song a bit literal, but Demon was dumped #inthelapofgods when his father sent him to be the beast keeper on mt. Olympus. The poor doll. This is a great beginning chapter series that I love. Currently only 8 books I believe.

cozypunk Only 8?! 5y
LibrarianRyan Yep. And no plans for new ones I believe. She‘s writing a new series now. I too love this series. 5y

My Jan kind of sucked. I hit my #pucturebookchallenge pretty hard, but didn't get much of anything else done. The picture book project at work didn't help much either. Now to play catch up.

4⭐️ It is time to say goodbye to Magic Tree house. Demon is here to keep the animals well cared for, and to give the young reader a grand adventure. Pandemonium (Demon for short) is the half human son of the god Pan. On the day he meets his father, he is taken to Mount Olympus to take care of the stable of mythical creatures. This is a great being series for all kids. It has adventure, it has vocabulary building, illustrations, and it has heart.

Part is Mt Olympus is #waterfalls. I'm sure Deamon keeps to the rivers and the lakes that he's used to. #augustgrrrl

A few days ago someone was looking for some children's books for a 6 year old that they could read on their own. I forgot about this series. It is black and white but does have some pictures. It's around or one level above magic tree house but not much. And fun. There are 6 books. I only have 4

youngreadrshelf The Hank the Cowdog is a good series for that age group. 8y

Leniverse I've never seen any of the Magic Treehouse books either, but upon googling I see that the first book takes them back to the Cretaceous, so that's bound to be a hit. 8y
LibrarianRyan @Leniverse the Magic Tree House books are the most popular beginning chapter books for kids in the US. There is like 60-70 and she still writes them. I preferred the books by Tony Abbott that are one step above magic tree house. They were popular in Colorado but not in Illinois. 8y
Leniverse I'll have to check if they're available in the UK as well. Amazon can probably provide. 8y

Seems to be a promising introduction to Greek mythology before introducing Rick Riordan's books to my seven year old.
