Black Moses
Black Moses | Alain Mabanckou

It's 1970, and in the People's Republic of Congo a Marxist-Leninist revolution is ushering in a new age. But over at the orphanage on the outskirts of Pointe-Noire where young Moses has grown up, the revolution has only strengthened the reign of terror of Dieudonn Ngoulmoumako, the institution's corrupt director. So Moses escapes to Pointe-Noire, where he finds a home with a larcenous band of Congolese Merry Men and among the Zairian prostitutes of the Trois-Cents quarter. But the authorities won't leave Moses in peace, and intervene to chase both the Merry Men and the Trois-Cents girls out of town. All this injustice pushes poor Moses over the edge. Could he really be the Robin Hood of the Congo? Or is he just losing his marbles? Black Moses is a larger-than-life comic tale of a young man obsessed with helping the helpless in an unjust world. It is also a vital new extension of Mabanckou's extraordinary, interlinked body of work dedicated to his native Congo, and confirms his status as one of our great storytellers.

Oh dear. I have no doubt I am coming late to the party on this one but recovering from a minor medical thing and cruising around on the iPad looking at all things books and just discovered Juniper Books. This could be a problem considering all the books I want equal a California home mortgage 😉. #juniperbooks

Mdargusch It‘s that free shipping piece. If you don‘t spend $150 then the shipping is so expensive. 7y

#TBRtemptation post 2! Recently released. Long-listed for the Man Booker Prize. It's described as the Oliver Twist of 1970s Africa. Moses lives at an orphanage run by a malicious stooge. He's terrorized by a pair of twins. He eventually escapes the orphanage with him and they start a make-shift gang surviving on petty theft. Funny, moving, & ultimately tragic in the repressive world of the Congo. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

The last book that I've read and is set in #Africa was Black Moses. Story is set in Republic of the Congo or Congo-Brazzaville. In the story we follow the life of orphan Moses - through political circumstances in the country.

Pickpick

An intriguing book that mixes; political satire, political explanation, and a brilliant coming of age narrative. At once, Heartbreaking and hilariously funny #imbooker2017

Mehso-so

We follow the life of Moses in an orphanage and later as a member of the gang in the city and how political changes in the Congo affect his life. The author exposes many problems, he doesn't deal with them critical - but as an everyday reality, seasoned with irony. Some passages are painfully beautiful, but I didn't feel the book as a whole, especially the third part seems very weak and unconvincing. But - the last part is simply brilliant.
